Maybe spending stupid amounts of money on power cords isn't entirely harmless

Okay, I spent some time testing this out. Used an Android phone. I sat it upon the arm of my couch. it is important you don't try and hand hold it or leave it in a pocket. In some past concerts I have stacked the phone on hymnals on the end of an unused pew and gotten very good results. I played a song, repeated it at lower level etc. etc. etc. Recorded the song, dumped the file into Audacity and examined it. Lined these up within a few samples for each version. My AC was on for the first and part of the second. My fridge in the adjacent kitchen came on just before the 4th version was played. Then cycled off before I was done with a couple more versions.

The average level wasn't possible to get reliably at .1 db difference. It was sort of reliable at .2 db difference. At .3 db, .5 db and 1 db it was solidly repeatable. So in principle this can work for levels of loudness change that might escape listeners.

How noisy will the crowd be, and so on and so forth. I don't know. As long as the same music is used it seems likely you will get a few seconds that will allow average levels to be accurately compared. If you had the recorded wav files from several phones you could quite possibly detect some rather small manipulations. Also getting close to one of the speakers gives you a better signal to noise profile vs spurious noise in the venue.

I didn't do it today, but have in the past and using the same musical track it is possible to detect EQ alterations to around the same level reliably. A .3 or 4 db change in the differential spectrum can be detected with a phone used this way.

EDIT to Add APP info: I used RecForgeLite. It allows up to 48 khz sample rates and saving as wav. Also allows you to turn off AGC (automatic gain control). There is a RecForge II out which may be better and also allows wav and disabling of AGC. 16 bit, but for this purpose that is plenty.

So, is anybody actually attending? And if so, is anyone planning to attend the Nordost demo, observe carefully, and raise questions? If not, 'tis a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying not a whole helluva lot, no?

Sorry, I can't help myself, but you just reminded me. I couldn't think of a better place, probably one of the biggest locations to benefit from income redistribution, filled with self-indulgent professional shoppers with obscene shopping habits, with a population diversity containing just 0.7% African-American, evenly split between greedy Republicans and Democrats, with median home values of 1.6 million (where no hoi polloi need apply), filled with restaurants that would cost some Americans 50% of their "lowly income" TO HOLD an "audiophile show" to the same self-indulgent people who can argue about the veracity of demos of 6,000-25,000 power plugs.

Christopher, you in particular who brought up the Picketty thing should find this a quite interesting parody and must ask yourself, are you and others part of the "problem" you abhor? I think in the spirit of this thread all should attend as Christopher is requesting.

I just found it funny

No what's funny is my being foolish enough to waste a few minutes seeing how to measure the Nordost demo. And put these details more than a thousand posts deep in a thread where probably no one will see it. Then having someone act as if whether anyone uses that info matters in such a meandering ridiculous thread.

BUT we are back on topic, NO?

Google "Priaptor" if you want to see how well he behaves elsewhere on the internet.

We were for two posts.

Well, that shouldn't keep any of your stuff from being available. Besides, you just love to hear yourself type. Why would you want to deprive any of us the chance to see even more examples of your extremely well-formulated and devastatingly incisive opinions?

Boy you woke up in a feisty mood this morning. Did the puppy keep you up all night? With the exception of a few (like Jud and BM), I think my "devastatingly incisive opinions" have more factual backup than most on this thread who just shoot from the hip; but then again, that is just my "devastatingly incisive opinion".

So Christopher asked a question.

Are you going to that bastion of middle America, Newport Beach, to evaluate the legitimacy of Nordost's claims? I'm not. I am done mixing with hoi polloi.

Damn, I was hoping you'd pay for my tab! No more mixing with the hoi polloi? Really?

Maybe I took the wrong approach:

... everybody here realizes there is more important schiit than this schiit. This is clearly categorized by Picketty as "merde de poulet".

...and given the dates, I'm figuring Bernie's gonna be somewhere in the area and maybe you could give me a lift to the show? We could listen to The Weavers and Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and Bruce and Rage Against The Machine the whole way (and maybe even a little ganga in the mix?)!

Does it ever resolve? All my other Goldens have loved car rides, even for thousands of miles. This one is about to heave by the time we get to the end of the driveway. There are no other obvious problems, her ears are clear, etc.

I have the same issue with Koufax. Nothing works.

However, interestingly enough, if I used a leash made out of Nordost Odin 2, instead of Shunyata, he was more willing to go into the car. I am thinking about rewiring the car with Odin 2. So I figure if I rewired my wife's MDX with Odin 2 I may just have the most expensive car at THE SHOW in Newport!!

Let's see... those Sain Reference power cables in your system should do the trick. Wow.$3,500 for 6 ft., $595 for each additional foot. No slouch! But no doubt, you got a good discount. Maybe you could compare them with the Nordost in the demo? Now THAT would be something, Doc. Who knows, maybe you'd make Bill a convert?

With likely quite a few well heeled Medical Specialists attending to help with income redistribution ?

P.S.

Before you jump down my throat, I have a couple of genuinely nice guys ,who happen to be Medical Specialists as friends, AND I have heard differences with $10K of power cables , despite being plugged into a lowly Hardware store power board through one of their systems when using big 150W Class A Nelson Pass monoblocks .

Yes, I was surprised to hear a small improvement. Small improvements can add up to a much larger improvement.

How a Digital Audio file sounds, or a Digital Video file looks, is governed to a large extent by the Power Supply area. All that Identical Checksums gives is the possibility of REGENERATING the file to close to that of the original file.

Yes huge discount.

BUT the guy who made my speakers did send me a 1.25 meter Odin power cable for my then REF75 to try and it was great. I couldn't swing the cash to actually buy one and had to send it back, but it was great, both as a power cord as well as a leash for me dog.

I am not going to jump down your throat. I get it. Life is too short. Be my guest and let everyone enjoy in the manner they want, whether it be a medical specialist, lawyer, etc.
