I am hoping Marantz releases an MQA firmware update like Bluesound did for its products. I want an MQA home theater processor. MQA in a receiver would be great. I have seen nobody talking about it though. Link to comment

GUTB
Here is the Node 2. We can clearly see it's not a real DAC: Link to comment
BilboAlaska
I don't know what a real dac is but I know that the Node 2 works. How big of a dac does it take to improve the Node and how much does it cost? Link to comment

Again, I hope you will take the time to start a thread so we may be educated. oneway23, Chopsrr and RBM 2 1 Link to comment
mjb
A couple of clicks found the internal picture posted by @GUTB is from this article, which also identifies the DAC as a TI PCM5122. Link to comment
oneway23
I hear GUTB is going to buy everyone who posts in this thread a proper DAC... Link to comment
Popular Post audio.bill
The Bluesound Node2 is a streamer with a built in DAC which retails for just $500. It provides great value for what it offers which includes many desirable features. It is not expected to compete with stand alone DACs at many multiples of its price, but can also be used to feed a superior external DAC via its digital output. It has been very favorably reviewed worldwide as one of the best such devices at its price. BilboAlaska and Melvin 2 Link to comment

It is very easy to integrate into your hifi system and offers first-class sound performance via its analogue and headphone outputs. Qobuzism! Chopsrr 1 Link to comment

oneway23
Any rumblings or whispers of Bluesound Gen. 3 products? I fully expected something at Munich High-End, seeing as the Gen. 2 stuff was released in October 2015, but, maybe I'm just spoiled by annual tech upgrade cycles? Link to comment
BilboAlaska
So really, I still wonder what level dac would improve the Node 2 and Vault 2? There must be a better dac available but it would have to have the appropriate connections. I wouldn't mind putting a dac in line if that improved it. One would need to know if that would work and how much one would expect to spend to upgrade the Bluesound? If you spent double the cost of the Node 2, you may get what, 10%, 20% improvement? BilboAlaska
Bluesound App keeps reminding me of the new upgrade so I downloaded it and dragged it into the apps folder. It did not upgrade so I repeated but I keep getting the old one back when I install the newly downloaded one. that is on an iMac. I didn't bother with the iPad because if I can't do it on the iMac I give up until I can call support. Fortunately, Bluesound has excellent customer support. I was impressed. It is like Apple who will walk you through the repair or problem. Link to comment
fredduc
A question for those who know more about DACs than I do, but, would connecting a Cambridge Audio DacMagic improve the sound? Of course, I can test it myself as I have this DAC, but, I'm awaiting some expert answers. I've read this thread, but I don't understand all of it as I'm not that much into this audio-science-stuff, but, I'm willing to learn THX. Link to comment
arcman
I am currently using airplay thru ATV to stream on my main system I subscribe to Roon, Tidal and Qobuz sublime prime +. I have the Nova Pre as my pre/ dac. Everythng sounds and runs perfect, except I can't stream above 16/48 (ATV). I'm ordering a Node 2 to be able to stream higher than redbook. I will hook both analog and digital outs to my Nova. I'll be curious to compare the two Dacs. The Nova pre peaks at 24/96 ( which covers 90% of Qobuz sublime + streaming). TEAC seems to be on board with MQA and Hoping they will release a new version of their 5xx series Dacs. Link to comment

Not that I know so much about DACs (I don't) but in my non-expert opinion it's a matter of taste. Often the differences are subtle until you go much higher up the food chain. The Node 2 uses a Burr-Brown DAC which is nicely balanced and quite capable. Will the DacMagic be an improvement? That is truly for you to decide for yourself. Welcome to CA and to this thread. BTW, because the Node 2 is also a preamp/DAC I would think a more accurate test would be to use it as such, taking the Nova out of the analog-out path altogether. Please let us know how you make out. But, I'm still curious about some theoretical explanations too Dual Wolfson WM8740 24-bit DACs are in the DacMagic I believe. Interesting to read is Kenrockwell link. Link to comment
arcman
I would probably guess the BS dac is probably along the lines of mid-fi Dacs like my peachtree. My Zu Omen Defs are quite revealing, so if there is a difference I should hear it right away. I'm hoping the BS dac is just as good or better sounding to what I already have. That way I can utilize its digital input for my ATV. Unfortunately, the Nova Pre only has one set of analog inputs. I will need to get a high quality a/b switch so I can stilll play my SACDs on my oppo player Link to comment
mansr
Does anyone know if the Node 2 works as an MQA renderer (for the Toslink input) with the "core" decoding done in software (Tidal or Audirvana)? I know it has a full decoder, so there's not much need for this mode of operation, but I'm still curious as to whether it's possible. Link to comment
