Windows Server 2012 R2 Backup

What are people using to back up their Windows server 2012 R2 OS drives? I use Acronis True image for my PCs running Win 10, etc., but their server backup software costs $1800. I'd like to be able to make a clone of the drive so if it ever dies I can quickly recreate it. I don't really have the need to backup often since the data on the drive doesn't really change.

Hi dminches,

I am using Macrium Reflect. I prefer it a lot in comparison to my former experience with Acronis. Take a careful look at Macrium's webside. There is a free version available for non-comercial use.

I do full disc backup booted from a USB stick only, can't comment on the incremental or differential functionality and using it installed on disc.

Take care

Thomas

Thanks Thomas.

Does the free home edition support WS 2012 R2 or do I have to get a server version for that? The web site isn't clear on that.

Hi dminches,

it is difficult to get hold of the free version's history page. You can take a more detailed look here:

Macrium Reflect Patch Details

I always do a test of the backup and writing it back as well. It works well here.

Take care

Thomas

Has anyone here tested, this backup system on win 2012r2 core

AOMEI OneKey Recovery Premium

After backing up system, you can press a special keyboard button - F11 default when your computer starts up to enter into Windows PE environment, and then automatically launch AOMEI OneKey Recovery.

What are people using to back up their Windows server 2012 R2 OS drives?

I do backup without installing 3rd party tools

1. Enable Windows Server Backup feature

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732081(v=ws.11).aspx

2. I am using the following command line to do backup to network location

WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:\\server\share\folder -include:C: -allCritical -vssFull -quiet

Full system restore:

Boot from Windows 2012 R2 installation media - select image recovery, start network, enter the backup location you specified in the wbadmin command above.

This description is for Win2008 but it can be used for Win2012 too:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2009/02/04/windows-server-backup-2008-restore-from-network-location.aspx

To restore individual files:

The backup result is VHDX file, which can be mounted by Disk Management (diskpart) locally or for example by Gizmo Central directly from backup network location UNC path.

I used this scenario many times. Troubles come (solvable) if you wish to restore to smaller disk than the original. Backup/restore runs slower than other commercial solutions, but it is reliable.

Shadow Protect is pretty cost effective but you need to partition your setup in line with the vendors best practice.

Cloudberry is also very cost effective and hooks directly into online storage options like Amazon s3.

Or there the native backup stuff from Microsoft.

You can even mout the image for file copy to it

Which version should I get so I can create a clone of my Windows Server 2012 R2 hard drive and restore it in the event of hardware failure?
