Freann
Not sure if this was noted elswhere. The latest release (2015/11/28) can convert redbook to DSD64 and DSD128 and output DSF files. Has anybode tried? Outlaw
I think it only converts DSD to PCM. Link to comment
Freann
No, it does PCM to DSD – read the relase notes. I tried it and it works like a charm. Can’t say anything about the SQ impact yet. Totsipaki
Converting DSD to PCM and vice versa is a practically useless procedure, a waste of time in my opinion. That's because most popular playback software does this on the fly if It is needed, for example playing back DSD on a non dsd dac, or If we choose It like on Jriver. The only real need is for converting DSD Iso flies to folders containing DSF split tracks with metadata for playing back on streamers who are not compatible with iso's but are compatible with DSD, or to save space by throwing away the multichannel mixes of Iso's and making them more usable for coputer use. So the real question is wether XLD can split SACD Iso's into DSF tracks which I can not answer yet since I haven't had the Time to try It. Link to comment
Totsipaki
I just read that It does split Iso's form the previous Update, now that's interesting. Gotta try It.. "2014/11/29 Supported SACD .iso format in DSD decoder" Link to comment
RolandGo
But that was "only" ISO to PCM. About DSD Support in XLD If I understand the new version correctly, there is now the possibility of going from PCM to DSF. Thus, in a two-step process, it should be able to get from ISO to DSF. Although for that purpose, one can use ISO2DSD from Sonore instead, which works in one step. Link to comment
Freann
For me this is a way of finding out what A+ with DSD upsampling *might* sound like. Nes
Interesting. Had not noticed. Useful as not all players do this on the fly and automatically. Also, end result depends on the actual SRC algorithms used. Merging NADAC / Theta Compli --> Spectral DMC-20 --> Spectral DMA-250 --> Avalon Ascendant (with tweeter upgrades) Link to comment
Nes
Been trying it out. Bit buggy. Crashes regularly. Merging NADAC / Theta Compli --> Spectral DMC-20 --> Spectral DMA-250 --> Avalon Ascendant (with tweeter upgrades) Link to comment
skolis
Been trying it out. Bit buggy. Crashes regularly. Not sure which one that you are referring to is buggy... but..... I was running versions from 2013 ( Version 20131102 (145.0)) and 2014 ( can't remember which) on both MacBookPro and Mac Mini without issues. Now trying to run 20151128((149) on my macmini and it doesn't run worth s**t. Anyone else having problems? Link to comment
mwheelerk
It really nice to see a freeware like XLD (donations accepted) keep this tool updated if not on a real frequent basis. "A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open." Frank Zappa Link to comment
Nes
I was referring to the PCM -> DSD converter specifically. That crashed many times. Also the resulting DSD files were not playable, my amp even went into protection mode! odelay
Thanks for the heads up Nes! I'd be curious to know anyone manages to get good results with XLD - converting PCM -> DSD, or vice versa. I'd be curious to know anyone manages to get good results with XLD - converting PCM -> DSD, or vice versa. I've converted DSD2.0Mhz ISO to PCM 24/176 with XLD v148.2, no problem. Had to tag track metadata manually, but no big deal. SQ is great. Link to comment

Outlaw
I see how to convert DSD to PCM.How do you convert from PCM to DSD ? Link to comment
mwheelerk
I understand the conversion of DSD to PCM but what would be the purpose in reverse? "A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open." Frank Zappa Link to comment
wwaldmanfan
I understand the conversion of DSD to PCM but what would be the purpose in reverse? Well, if you have a DSD-capable DAC (I don't), and enough computer power, the guys using HQPlayer swear by it. Link to comment

I could understand DSD>PCM for playback on a non-DSD DAC but couldn't imagine putting a DSD wrapper on a PCM file for playback on a DSD DAC thinking it somewhat akin to taking Lossy to Lossless.
