wgscott
What should I get? Do I need thunderbolt? Ideally I would like to be able to play movies, rip, and record to writable Blu ray discs. Link to comment
AudioDoctor
I don't know which external drive is the best, but I do know this software is pretty good. Why would you not go with thunderbolt if you can? Macgo Mac Blu-ray Player - Unique Blu-ray Menu Player on Mac edit: I don't even see a thunderbolt connected external at OWC. Bob Stern
It's hard to find useful reviews, so you might search Amazon and see which models have the fewest complaints. A good candidate appears to be the LG BE14NU40, but it's 2 years old so may be superseded soon. http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Super-Multi-External-BE14NU40/dp/B00ACOQF2Q/ HQPlayer (on 3.8 GHz 8-core i7 iMac 2020) > NAA (on 2012 Mac Mini i7) > RME ADI-2 v2 > Benchmark AHB-2 > Thiel 3.7 Link to comment
Bob Stern
When I investigated this a couple years ago, I got the impression that Blu-ray burning resulted in lots of coasters. Is that true? I was deterred by: (1) how expensive the blanks are; (2) how long the burning process takes; and (3) the probability of burning a coaster and having to repeat the process. wgscott
I've pretty much given up on the idea. I decided the NAS was probably a better move for data preservation. However, this one looks somewhat promising: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TL4HGB2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_1&smid=A1H9NMCPZH97BO Link to comment
