External hard drive format with Synology

Recommended Posts

Hi, I like to back up my iTunes music folder that is on my Synology 212. I bought a new LaCie hard drive to connect via USB on the Synology but forgot what format I should use: Ext4 or Fat32. Which one is it so I have a workable backup on my music collection?

Thanks.

And I actually back up my Synology to a 6TB USB drive that is HFS+ ( Mac ) formatted. Actually I rotate back up to two different external drives.

FWIW.

Assuming your drive will be used exclusively by the Synology, use Ex4. Any other format seems to result in very slow file transfers. I tried a few different formats and Ex4 allowed by far the quickest file transfer by quite some margin. Not twice as fast but not too far off.
