findog3103
Hi, I like to back up my iTunes music folder that is on my Synology 212. I bought a new LaCie hard drive to connect via USB on the Synology but forgot what format I should use: Ext4 or Fat32. Which one is it so I have a workable backup on my music collection? Thanks. dtb300
Say your NAS dies and all you have are the backups. The format of the backup will dictate what OS you install the drive on to recover your files. DTB Rig: https://cgi.audioasylum.com/systems/9648.html Link to comment

kumakuma
As I mentioned on a different thread, I formatted my backup drive using ext4. OS X can't read such drives directly but there is a utility available if such a need arises: Paragon ExtFS for Mac OS X 9 - Overview Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby Edgy and dull and cut a six inch valley Through the middle of my skull Link to comment
baddog
And I actually back up my Synology to a 6TB USB drive that is HFS+ ( Mac ) formatted. Actually I rotate back up to two different external drives. FWIW. Silver Circle Audio | Roon | Devialet | Synology | Vivid Audio | Stillpoint Aperture | Auralic | DH Labs Link to comment
Raym87
Assuming your drive will be used exclusively by the Synology, use Ex4. Any other format seems to result in very slow file transfers. I tried a few different formats and Ex4 allowed by far the quickest file transfer by quite some margin. Not twice as fast but not too far off. odelay 1 MacMini 8Gb OSX > Pure Music / Bitperfect / Amarra / iTunes > Synology DS215J NAS > Schiit Wyrd > Stello U3 > Naim Uniti Atom, Harbeth P3ESR. jtwrace
As mentioned above ext4 is your best bet for now. This thread might be of interest though.
