Audio_ELF
As I commented above, I use multiple genre's for each album so (for examples) Sleater-Kinney is Alternative Pop/Rock\\Indie Rock\\_Alternative/Indie Rock Gregory Porter is _Jazz\\_Pop/Rock\\Contemporary Jazz Vocals\\Vocal Jazz Django Django gets _Alternative/Indie Rock\\Indie Electronic\\Indie Rock\\Experimental Rock\\Neo-Psychedelia and Davina and the Vagabonds is _Blues\\_Pop/Rock Predominantly I get these genres from a simple copy and paste from AllMusic (same as Roon use) with a bit of editing using automation scripts on MP3Tag. Each of the genres (divided by \\ in the above) are displayed separately with those prefixed by _ at the top of the list so these are limited to a few genres). Using MinimServer and my chosen control point I can "drill down" so choose "_Jazz" and then from there perhaps choose Vocal Jazz. Eloise --- ...in my opinion / experience... While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing. And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism. keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out. Link to comment
Musicophile
Roon, btw, is working hard on this problem and I am very interested in what their solution will be. The moment they get that right, I'll purchase the software probably. Interestingly enough, I saw the interface for the first at a fellow CA members' house yesterday, and while I was quite impressed, they had the Esbjörn Svensson Trio as "Downtempo" (among others). I was really a bit surprised about this, given that I'd rather have associated Café del Mar-type stuff than EST; even if they use electronic elements. So it is really hard to get right. In the end, I suppose I'll still have to do all the work myself. Just hope that Damien releases a multi-genre tag version of A+ eventually, or I'll need to fill-in all his incremental tags I'm not using at this point (instrument, style, period), but I'm not sure if those tags are universally used. audiventory
LOL, Remind me to tell that 25 year genre that they don't exist. Labeling a movement is just that, a label (different parts of the world, different labels), but we have to have descriptive short titles, so we go with it, but it's really about the music, is it not. Okay, like it really matters what genre titles I use. Kind of fun, can tell you a lot about a persons music tastes, notice there is no rap, hip hop or contemporary country. Roon v1.1 is supposed to allow you to edit what it has generated as an override. v1.1 is out but I have not had a chance to look into this. Ultimately, genre is one of those things that's not clear-cut so you (especially you... ) will likely have the desire to input your own. The way I see it is: if Roon gets it right 90% of the time, I am happy to overlay my fixes for the remaining 10%. Having said this, I have never been a huge fan of genre simply because I have found it unhelpful. miguelito
Yes, that's what I seem to recall from a post here. Ok, I was not aware of this... But frankly in my book the cost of a basic 16gb iPad of the latest generation is nothing compared to what I get from Roon. YMMV. But frankly in my book the cost of a basic 16gb iPad of the latest generation is nothing compared to what I get from Roon. YMMV. Yeah, @Musicophile is correct. The 3rd-gen iPad (which I have, too) will not be able to run the Roon iOS app. The Roon iOS app will require an iPad (and only an iPad, no iPhones at this time) that has OpenGL ES 3.0. These devices are listed in Table 2-1 here. It seems like there will be an October announcement of new iPads, so I'll wait until then to see whether I want a new one or maybe an "old" iPad Air 2. (Not doing this just for Roon; I was due for a new one anyway, and Roon gave me another reason to move ahead with this.) --David Listening Room: Mac mini (Roon Core) > iMac (HQP) > exaSound PlayPoint (as NAA) > exaSound e32 > W4S STP-SE > Benchmark AHB2 > Wilson Sophia Series 2 (Details) Office: Mac Pro > AudioQuest DragonFly Red > JBL LSR305 Mobile: iPhone 6S > AudioQuest DragonFly Black > JH Audio JH5 Link to comment

Johnny Moondog
...I have never been a huge fan of genre simply because I have found it unhelpful. Ditto. After investing the time fact checking, deciding, and agonizing, which genre(s) to input during the ripping process... and over time noticing how I'd never used that metadata during a listening session... I recognized that for myself, the ratio of effort to usefulness was extremely low. My solution was to just stop inputing the genre tag. “We don’t like their sound … and guitar music is on the way out!” – Decca Records, 1962 Taiko Audio Extreme | Vinnie Rossi L2i SE and L2 DAC | Omega Super Alnico Monitors | JL Audio Fathom Sub Link to comment

coleb13
After initially worrying about having the "correct" genre tags, I began freely assigning and altering them as they occurred to me and making up new ones that I thought might be useful. As an example, a friend of mine was amused when browsing my collection to find "circus" applied to music that sounded to me like the music I have heard at a circus. I now find the tags much more useful to me, and I think that is the point because it is after all my collection. And if you happen to be in the mood for some lively music that might invoke memories of circuses I can come up with some very quickly ... Link to comment

I love this approach! Will definitely explore. Thanks! And since you offered, hit me with some Circus Invoking Music. Use private message so we don't hijack this thread. I almost ran away to join the circus. Seriously. The first time I saw Cirque du Soleil's traveling show — Saltimbanco (1993) — I sat inside the Grand Chapiteau tent for 30 minutes after the performance ended, racking my brain over whether to leave my career and attempt to join the group. “We don’t like their sound … and guitar music is on the way out!” – Decca Records, 1962 Taiko Audio Extreme | Vinnie Rossi L2i SE and L2 DAC | Omega Super Alnico Monitors | JL Audio Fathom Sub Link to comment
