Sydney Audio Club Double Blind Testing Digital Audio Software & Formats

Recommended Posts

August 16 is the date where the Sydney Audio Club will double blind test Digital Audio formats and software (OSX only for these tests).

Tests to be undertaken

- PCM vs DSD

- SQ between Audirvana +, Jriver and Pure Music

- Different Ripping Software, does it make a difference, XLD vs dbpoweramp

Looking forward to the results and more importantly the methods of testing.

Hi One and a half,

Is it possible for non members to attend? If so do you have a time and location?

Thanks in advance.

It's all there in the link to John Darko that 1 1/2 gave originally.

Visitors welcome,2PM at Epping Creative Centre,Dence Park- Epping.

How a Digital Audio file sounds, or a Digital Video file looks, is governed to a large extent by the Power Supply area. All that Identical Checksums gives is the possibility of REGENERATING the file to close to that of the original file.

Here's a copy from the Facebook page:

For our August meeting the Sydney Audio Club conducted a comparison of different music servers, different codex and CD to CD ripped to disc to high-res. When we announced the meeting format, there were people writing and calling to say we were wasting our time – the contention was that all music players sound the same.

We had about 45 very interested and enthusiastic members and guests attending.

First up we compared Pure Music V2 to Audirvana V2 to JRiver V20. Of course Pure Music and Adriana are Mac only, so we compared them to the Mac version of JRiver.

At the end I asked if people could hear a difference between the players – the answer was a resounding ‘yes’. I asked if they had a preference for one player over another, and again the answer was a resounding ‘yes’. At that point everyone wanted to know which player was which.

The most favoured were Audirvana and Pure Music.

We then did a blind comparison between a DSD64 recording and a high-res PCM (24/96) version of the same track. Both were downloads. This was a less conclusive contest – the DSD64 version won 18 votes, the high-res PCM version won 17 votes. Interestingly, people could describe the differences in the presentations but their preferences balanced out the score in the end. In short both are excellent.

Not much on the methodology detail if someone was there can they elaborate? Remember this test was for OSX players only.

And I believe Jriver at Mac is still in beta.

I don't think that's the case any longer. The current OS X version is JRiver Media Center 20.0.132.
