Hi everyone. Does anyone have any new update on if/when Auralic will offer Lightning DS as a web based or computer app that can be used on a laptop, as opposed to the ipad/mobile versions?

Probably never - they promised that for years!

I have a dream...?

Amen

I forgot where I read it, but Auralic has already stated they're not building any software for Android because they don't have the resources to build apps outside of Apple.

So given they said no to Android and building in PC support would be even more challenging, I would assume that's not happening either.

I have just had a reply from Auralic on the same issue, this was the response.

I had a look  at my SSD the drive is formatted in EXT 3 by the Aries, a Linux file system which Windows cannot recognise.

Though strangely the Lightning DS is installed on a FAT 32 partition.

SMB v1 support for Windows

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-access-files-network-devices-using-smbv1-windows-10

That's irrelevant else UNIX servers and PC clients could never interoperate. Disk format is of local hardware importance only, otherwise its hidden behind network protocols to remore access. Sounds more like a network mapping and permissions problem.

USB2 isn't very fast. How many albums/songs in the library you are importing? Two factors I can think of are timeout due to slow scan completion or in the case

of a microSD card, having the card disabled for write. Or your existing library scan may be corrupt, might need to delete it and scan all from scratch.

Hi

lightning DS shown it has finished scanning and showing the size and no of files etcc, it is only when they try to import music library that the error occurs.

I restarted everything from start

Got that the first time you said it. Lets move on. Somethings breaking when the mini tries to add to/store the library index.

(1) have you error checked the USB drive ? (2) how many albums/songs on the drive + how many are already in your library?

harddisk corruption, a bloated library index or a corrupted library index could cause the symptom.

Are you able to try uploading the music files through the network folder instead of plugging in a USB drive? That will tell you if it's a problem with the drive or the Auralic device.

you were right. My USB drive has many video and music folders. I downloaded some songs to another thumb drive and it works like a charm

thanks

USB thumb drive works though. Next issue is when I tried to assess network music folder in my desktop, same error occur. I am new to this so I am struggling to stream using my desktop PC folders

Can't say that I ever bothered much with USB2 attached drive because of speed... much easier just to put a 2.5" sata drive inside the mini. You may need to install Minimserver on the PC to enable UPNP streaming to the mini after you configure it for your media folder locations..

Hello
As a recent user of Aries mini…I am a little perturbed…is it too much of a good thing?
The bass is louder, instruments are clear, treble is high, voices are “forward” .
Basically overwhelming soundstage and I can’t listen for more than 10 songs.

1.Should I move my sofa back a few feet and reposition speakers?
2.change my 4 year old DAC (chord qutehd)

Please advise

The mini can't really change tonal balance, just the resolution and tone color correctness. Am I correct to assume that you are using the USB input for the QuteHD which is

of 2012 design vintage? What amplification and speakers are in use?

Asynch US design has changed rapidly, I've changed my device every 18 months since 2012. The Chord DAC section should be just fine, not the cause.

Hi Dave

I use the optical input to chord.

Integrated -primaluna Hp

speaker-sonus auditor M on stands

I usually keep my volume at 9pm..rarely change it..

Mostly Spotify and downloaded 256kbps Bollywood music..

PS: I prefer a warmer sound as the quality of recordings of older Indian music is quite poor.

hmm optical is kind of hit or miss, I found the mini's optical to be very close to USB when I was using a Gustard U12,  both feeding a Metrum Octave.

We have similar electronics, speakers you have are praised as warm and detailed.

Overall it sounds like you are hearing increased digital artifacts (irritation) because the mini's greater information output is not clocked well via Toslink and your

Chord DAC section is competent enough to reproduce exactly what it gets at input, doesn't pull any punches like my warmer/more rolled off Metrum Octave.

Perhaps experiment with a newer generation external asynch USB converter like the Singxer F1? The Schiit Eitr I now use is very good but it doesn't support DSD

Thanks Dave..u described in audio terms what I was feeling with listening to music..the digital sound is way more pronounced .the instrument sounds are being emphasized ..of course the voices are very accurate..so that’s a plus ??

I will connect thru usb and check ..

Hi, not in anyway wanting to dissappoint you but the accuracy you are hearing is probably just a very etched sound. This can be the result of lo_ fi mp3 recordings. Try playing back a hi res or lossless well recorded file to see if the quality of files is the culprit. Also do keep in mind that the aries mini is an entry level product, their mid level streamers are way more musical and analog sounding. If you can get your hands on a discounted ( and now discontinued) aries femto you will understand what I mean. Your chord dac is a pretty good one so I don't think that is the culprit. You may want to experiment with an intona galvanic isolator and/or better cables between the aries and dac. Hope this helps.

Thanks..I have some flac files..will try the same..and yes I do have MP3's collected over the years..Spotify has some of those and I am building playlists to get them going..My main interest in Aries was to have a unified App to play local and streaming music (instead of opening up the mini-mac)..Looks like I got more than what I bargained for..I did see the Aries LE listed for 700 plus ...somthing to think about..

Appreciate your input:)

I think that's the biggest and most noticeable upgrade you can make. Unless you're 100% married to Spotify or don't mind the extra cost, I would switch over to Tidal Hi-Fi.

Always remember the golden rule, garbage in garbage out. Typically the more expensive, higher-fi the system, the more transparent, detailed, and accurate they will be. Which means if your music source is low quality it will bring out all the worst of it. I think the most important part of any music system is the source/streaming medium, and it's always the least expensive, easiest to get right, but often most ignored part of people's systems.

For reference I have an Auralic Mini outputting to a Chord 2Qute via USB. The 2Qute however has isolated USB so it handles RF noise better than your QuteHD from that connection. Technically and according to Rob Watts who's the designer, the Optical connection in your case should give the best most natural sound because it's immune to RF noise.

The main reason I eventually sold my mini was because the lowest volume instruments were a bit vague and muddy. In hind sight after later experimentation with other streamers, I now suspect that the stock SMPS was the cause. So whether you stay with mini or get an LE, a good power supply  is important. Auralic's

Linear PS for LE/mini retails separately for ~$300 and SBooster sells a high performance SMPS for under $300.

Yesterday I was testing my MP3's ,SPOTIFY and TIDAL master

Music was Bollywood(A.R.Rahman) ,Andrea Bocelli(somos Novios), Rick Astley(beautiful Life)

The 2 setups were

1.Mac Mini>USB>CHORD>Primaluna>Sonus Auditor

2.Mac Mini Minimserver>Aries Mini>Optical>CHORD> Primaluna>Sonus Auditor

Volume left at 9 o'clock.Volume in Aries Disabled..Volume in Mac mini =100

Results

  • Option#2 was always louder. The voice was way forward.Instruments were very clear and distinct.maybe this is what some call "3D".Violins played with clear layers and each was very apparent .

As Luvdac pointed out the aries mini is very revealing and if the source is bad..it shows it !!

Thanks @Luvdac @davide256 @rhern213 for your valuable comments and keeping noobs like me excited about this hobby.

You saved me a bunch by not buying a new dac or upgrading the aries mini

Out of curiosity, why are you using a Mac mini in front of the Aries? It's just as a server hosting all your downloaded MP3's?

As a tip, I have all my downloaded music in the Aries Mini's SSD slot. This eliminates an entire chain of hardware for you and potential quality loss coming from the MAC mini ports/extra cables, etc..
