CAPS V3 upgrade question

sorry for this second post but I have a question. I am in the process of considering an upgrade for my current CAPS v3 Topanga build.

 

Details:

CAPS v3 Topanga -

 

Case: Wesena HTPC-ITX4-Silver

Motherboard: Intel DN2800MT

Memory: DDR3 8GB RAM (991644)

SSD: MKNSSDAT60GB-DX Price:

Power Supply: 60W, 12V (PW-12V5A-L5)

PPA USB card is the only addition

OS: Win 8.1

Playback App: JRMC v19

 

My thought is to keep as much of the current build intact while simply just increasing the servers speed with a new motherboard (faster processor). I do a lot of High Res listening (SACD files -DSD, DSF etc and DVD-A rips in FLAC). Some of which is in Multi channel and the CAPS cant handle it so I have to run it through a separate more powerful pc (not a CAPS build).

 

I obviously would require a newer Mini- ITX MB without a fan in order to keep all the other hardware intact.

I hope you realise all of those motherboards use ATX power, so you will also need the Pico PSU to power the MoBo.

Thank you for the links! Can you elaborate on the need for atx power for the MB? I'm guessing it's something in addition to the regular PS I already have with my current CAPS?

The Intel DN2800 board uses a single rail DC connector, situated at the back panel.

 

The other bords use the 'grown up' ATX connector, situated inside the chassis:

You need Pico PSU to make this work:

 

HDPLEX-160W-DC-ATX-Power-Supply 16V-24V Wide Range Voltage Input

 

You will also need a suitable PSU, as all of those Pico PSU units need more than 12V your current PSU provides.

I've got an Intel DN2800MT to which I'm adding a PPA V2 USB and which I'm using as an NAA. It's not powerful enough CPU wise to do real filtering/oversampling/DSD conversion etc.

 

I'm looking at the upcoming D-1540 Xeon D (2 ghz x 8) sytems (45W). They should start hitting the streets in a few weeks. Running HQPlayer with DSD512 output uses roughly 3 out of 6 of my i7 IVB-E cores (i7-4830k - 3.5 ghz) so those boards you list above might be a bit underpowered depending on what you want to do.

PassMark performance benchmark for the Atom N2800 (dual core @ 1.86GHz) is 636.

 

These two would be upgrades:

J1900 (quad core, 1.99GHz): 1912

Celeron N2930: 1709

 

These two would not be upgrades, either due to performance or utilizing chipsets that have been replaced by something newer:

Atom D2550: 664

Atom D525: 695

 

I would maybe consider the ASROCK Q1900-ITX. At $75, it is much cheaper than most of the mobos you posted above, and the quad core J1900 could offer a good boost in performance over your existing setup. It is also based on a newer chipset than the mobos you posted above.

 

Main points to investigate further for you: I noticed you have a pretty low profile case, with a height restriction. Some of these newer mobos may have heatsinks on the CPU that could violate the height restriction. Also as Elberoth noted, you'll have to make some additional purchases/changes for your power source. If you're willing to part with about 20-25 dollars more, the Asrock Q1900 is also available in a version that has a DC jack in similar to the DN2800MT (link here - Q1900DC-ITX is the model number).

Q1900DC-ITX looks like a very sensible upgrade option for Intel DN2800 owners (CAPS v3 Topanaga & Lagoon) that does not require PSU change..

Thank you guys for all the help! The above info was very informative. In fact I really like the Q1900DC board! It might be the perfect low cost upgrade solution for my current build. My only one question is will the MB fit into my case?

 

My case:

Ultra low profile HTPC chassis.

Claims it accepts standard mini-ITX boards up to 2 1/8" or 54mm.

 

Thoughts? I could not find dimension for the ASrock board.

I would think that this one suits your needs:

ASRock Q1900TM-ITX ,

but it seems that in the US these boards are no longer available for the original pricing. You need to look for thin-mini-ITX boards for your case, the boards have usually the letter T in the product name.

I opened up my case and it looks like there is plenty of room for the standard mini-itx board.

i attached some pics.

 

my question is how do I utilize my existing SSD hard drive from my current build? It's installed directly on the board and I,don't see a msata space on the newer board?
