DanRubin
1000 $ for extra 1Tb? It's SSD, so that's not really out of line. Mac Mini 5,1 [i5, 2.3 GHz, 8GB, Mavericks] w/ Roon -> Ethernet -> TP Link fiber conversion segment -> microRendu w/ LPS-1 -> Schiit Yggdrasil Link to comment
firedog
They also make the DV zero - has no storage and they optimize it for playing files from a NAS. They say it is very close in sound to the DX, and is cheaper. So if you already have a NAS, might be the model to get. Main listening (small home office): Main setup: Surge protector +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Isolation>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments. Secondary Path: Server with Audiolense RC>RPi4 or analog>Cayin iDAC6 MKII (tube mode) (XLR)>Kii Three . Bedroom: SBTouch to Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Setup. Living Room/Kitchen: Ropieee (RPi3b+ with touchscreen) + Schiit Modi3E to a pair of Morel Hogtalare. All absolute statements about audio are false Link to comment
firedog
I love how people say this about every pc server made by a commercial company that claims they've made something that works better than "off the shelf". Have you seen personal and professional reviews of Antipodes models? I've never seen one where the person doesn't say that it sounds better than what he previously had (even if that was a DIY optimized audio PC/MAC) or even that it is the best sounding digital source he's ever heard. The Antipodes claim is not that they use super duper parts: They use good parts, but they claim that they optimize all the components in the PC so that the total package is very low noise, and this includes things such as measuring results, proprietary power supply, and writing proprietary software that is different for different HD's, etc. Is it true? I don't know. But to summarily dismiss it is silliness. So no, you can't "build these by yourself" - as much of the cost and uniqueness is the software, you'd have to order an audiophile PS, and I doubt you have the ability/equipment to do the measurements. Look's like pc computer made from off the shelf components. not sure what kind of OS they use but probably some kind of linux. Not very interesting. You can build these by yourself.
