4est
I voted other, even though I listen to a lot of jazz. There was was not an option for Americana/folk/singer songwriter. Paul R
I chose other, because my favorite of all favorite genre of music is probably closer to "folk" than anything else. Think Woody and Arlo Guthrie, Cara Dillon, Gordon Lightfoot, and a whole raft of modern groups that never seem to hit Blue Coast or HDTracks...(sigh) Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat DAC. InfernoSTi
I picked Rock because it covers a lot of ground and is the bulk of my music collection. However, I listen to a lot of recorded jazz, especially when I am really in the mood to hear "right there in your room" music and I never tire of the detail that the best jazz performers present and the best recordings preserve. I also go to hear classical music as much as I go to hear rock music (averaging the number of shows I've seen in the last ten years and including opera and ballet in the genre of classical, as well as averaging the number of shows I've heard in the last one year...so either slice is about the same): so they are equal by that measure. I go hear live jazz less but do from time to time and always wonder why I don't more. John Positive emotions enhance our musical experiences. John Thats an interesting perspective, I chose Rock as my favorite but I haven't been to a live rock concert in years (Fleetwood Mac was here just last week) but I frequent a Jazz club once a month or two and catch at least 4 to 5 symphonies a year. mayhem13
Please continue to vote those that haven't. Frankly I'm shocked at the margin for R&R at this point. I would have figured classical or Jazz for an audiophile site for sure. Link to comment
wwaldmanfan
I think it is difficult to categorize a lot of music into these very generalized genres. I am the only person here (so far) to vote for R&B (blues)...I find that hard to believe. How would you categorize an artist like Robert Cray? R&B? Blues? Soul? Singer/Songwriter? Rock? mwheelerk
It's difficult for me to pinpoint a single genre but if I based it solely on the number of albums I have it would fall to the catch-all genre of Rock which really could be split in as many ways as one might want. The same would hold true for Jazz or Blues my other favorite genres. Of the seventeen genres I use only Classical might be clearly defined. "A mind is like a parachute. I have him in Blues but I agree with you as he could easily fit in several genre as many others could. I've thought about creating Genre's with sub categories but I don't think it's important enough to me to take the time or make the effort. "A mind is like a parachute. No need for that here, but, what's interesting is if you go to the CDBaby website, where I buy a lot of FLAC downloads, there are 41 sub-genres in "blues" alone! This is why I don't attempt to categorize my own music library by genre, except for OST's (movie soundtracks). Link to comment
semente
My favourite genre is "classical", with a special preference for music of the romantic period. I also listen to small group and as also vocal jazz from the 50s and 60s, ethnic music from different origins, classical industani, persian and arab, and a bit of rock/alternative from the eighties and nineties. I have organised my music in different iTunes library folders according to genre: Classical & Romantic, Early Renaissance & Baroque, Ethnic, Jazz, Minimalist & Modern, Opera, Rock/Pop/Alternative, Soundtracks. semente
Country and World have a very poor showing. I expected country, but world was a surprise for sure! I like ethnic music and "classical" music from the east, but world (westernized ethnic) not really... Electronic music is utterly unlistenable. And I hate "synthetic" instruments (sampler). esldude
Guitarist Laurence Juber says that when asked if he can play country his reply is "which country?" Love that reply. Which brings to mind I also love good acoustical guitar. Other than country (and with good guitar country is tolerable for a bit). I actually find picking a favorite genre difficult. Acoustical guitar is not by a long ways the most often listened to genre for me. Yet when I do, it is very special and satisfying the way nothing else is. And always keep in mind: Cognitive biases, like seeing optical illusions are a sign of a normally functioning brain. We all have them, it’s nothing to be ashamed about, but it is something that affects our objective evaluation of reality. Link to comment

pdvm
I visit this site mainly via the iOS app, so I can't see the poll... To specify: I listen mainly to music from the romantic period, with a bit of classical, and a lot of extra Bach & Shostakovich at their respective ends of the spectrum. Probably I should have voted 'world' as well, as I listen to Hungarian and Romanian gipsy music a lot. Five or six guys playing old folk tunes together, all virtuosos of their instrument, no sheet music, just looking and listening to each other. Musicophile
I voted Classical (from Baroque to late romantic), but may as well have voted Jazz (especially piano trios and hard bop), both are by far my favorite genres. At the same time, I'm interested in a lot of other styles, I appreciate well done contemporary (to avoid the term "pop") music, especially from singer/songwriters, love my 1971-1974 Genesis, do the occasional French chanson (more the new wave since ~2005, less Brel and Becaud), and well done electronic music , "lounge" for background listening, trip hop for active listening.
