16 bit to 24 bit (Does padding the bits change the sound)

I am using Amarra Mini on my Mac Mini. While Amarra does a great job changing the sampling rate on the fly, it does not support changing the wordlength.

 

Should I just set MIDI preferences to 24bit for all sources? My understanding is that if a 16bit source file is played, there will just be another 8bits of 0's filled in.

 

Does this padding of bits affect the sound?

 

My system is set up like this:

Mac Mini -> Bryston BDA-1 ->BAT Pre -> Bat Amp -> Magico V3's
