Quadrophenia at HD this week plus more Deluxe Who and Faces

Recommended Posts

Is this the good version of Quadrophenia coming out? Leeds, Tommy plus Facess Ooo-La-La. Here's hoping.

The Who by Numbers sounds very good - relatively to other versions. DR is much higher (avg 11) than my old CD (8).

Is Quad taken from the SACD that was out a while back or the Blue-ray? I love this but before spending $40+ want to make sure. I already have the SACD version ripped to file but always looking for better.

Me too. I'm a huge Who fan. Unfortunately the albums are region restricted for Canada.

Sounds very good compared to previous versions. I have the original LP,the non-Deluxe CD, and the Deluxe CD.

This is the same running order as the Deluxe CD, but the DR is 12 as opposed to 9 for the Deluxe CD.

Cheers to a record company that gets it - audiophile downloads shouldn't be volume compressed:

Just an addendum: Listening to Live at Leeds and the Deluxe version has a great rendition of "Tommy" Live. Had forgotten how good it was. Not to mention the rest of the album.

What an amazing concert those kids at Leeds got to hear.

A VPN is your friend. In Chrome or Firefox you can use the Hola add-on.

Hola doesn't work, at least not for Canadians. However, I just tried Chrome/ZenMate and it worked. I've got some new music, including Quadrophenia, downloading right now. Thanks!

Just for others: Hola works on most blocked sites. Sometimes you have to play with it a little and try alternate servers. Also, try it with only the page you are trying to access via HOLA open, and not any other pages.

CD Japan is re-releasing The Who albums on SACD later this month (Nov-26).

The masters would be the same from Universal Music, unless SHM tweak them. Typically the SHM-SACD do better than standard commercial pressings for SQ (but fall short of MFSL, IMHO).

These SHM-SACDs do NOT have a CD layer, so can only be played by SACD players.

Friends, you are only getting half the experience !!!

Quadrophenia should be heard in it's intended format: Quadraphonic Sound !!!

Available on Bluray

Score 9.42/10 @ quadraphonicquad

5.1 - 24 / 96 DTS-HD Master Audio

5.1 - 24 / 96 Dolby TrueHD

2.0 - 24 / 96 LPCM

Also available on DVD

Score 7.48/10 @ quadraphonicquad

Wikipdia writes:

The name is a variation on the popular usage of the medical diagnostic term schizophrenia as dissociative identity disorder, to reflect the four distinct personalities of Jimmy, the opera's protagonist – each said to represent the personality of one member of The Who.

At the same time, the title is a play on the term quadraphonic sound, then a recent invention.

Composer Pete Townshend has said: "The whole conception of Quadrophenia was geared to quadraphonic, but in a creative sort of way.

I mean I wanted themes to sort of emerge from corners.

So you start to get the sense of the fourness being literally speaker for speaker."

Well not exactly true. PT didn't have true quadrophonic equipment available with true discrete 4 channels. So when he heard the first results of the pseudo quad mix he dumped the idea, as he understood there was no point in a quad mix that sounded worse than the stereo mix. The original mix and release was only in stereo.
