Only one question: is (or could be) the computer running pfsense a C.A.P.S. with Jriver installed?

I like your thinking, but it's not possible to run JRiver on a pfsense box. Or, let me rephrase that, it's not advisable. I'm sure with a lot of time on one's hands one could get it to work, but I'd consider it a nonstarter.

I have AT&T Uverse with the regular issue Pace 5268AC combo modem/router/wifi black box. Can anyone recommend a compatible upgrade?
