HDPLEX Linear Power Supply

Recommended Posts

I don't understand the power switch part but the gx-2 goes to a 4 pin plug on the dc-atx which then has a 24 pin atx to atx. If you want to use the HDP to power the ssd use the 4 pin to 3 sata and 1 molex cable from the dc-atx or create a separate dc jack feed and use the 5v output from the HDP and run it to the ssd via a cable.

Hifidelit, Thanks for responding. I think where I made the mistake is the 2 thin wire connector for the Main Power switch for my Antec HTPC which in the end has a molex, probably was not connected properly. I did connect the 24 to 24 when I tried to boot up the PC. But when I tried just to power SATA SSD from the DC-ATX, I did not connect the 24 to 24 and what I am guessing from your comment, that's not the right thing to do. I reached Larry though on a related topic to see if I have a faulty unit as I never see the Blue Light come on when I connect the DC-ATX to the LPSU using the 19v connector.

I just got my HDPlex today hooked it up to my customized Laptop and hooked it up the iFI USB and WOW the difference in SQ was immediate! The low end more tight and the decay of the instruments is pretty remarkable. I'm glad I got mine in time Larry is now out!

In your's opinion, which type of DC/DC converters - PICO or this: Morex 60W 80W DC DC Power Supply Board 12V 20 PIN ATX Mini ITX MX 0608 | eBay would be the best to HDPLEX? I use J1900 MB GIGABYTE - Motherboard - CPU Onboard - GA-J1900N-D2H (rev. 1.1)

Doesn't look like you could go wrong either way I would choose the one that has the best buyer guarantee or peace of mind. From a price perspective they look about even so buy both see what you like best send the other back.

Why don't use the ones that HDPlex offer, they are normally specialised for Hi-Fi use. There are 250 and 160 watts.

CD40s (3DLab) - EDEL NMR (Engineered) -or- DAPHILE (Q1900itx (Asrock) + LPS 100W (HDPLEX) + tX-USBexp (SOtM) - HYDRA-Z (Audiobyte) + LPS-1 (UpTone) - BLACK DRAGON (Audiobyte) - 2 x Ncore NC400 (Hypex) - M4 (P. E. Léon) - Cables: (Mapleshade, Audioprana, Nordost, Referenz1017, Pangea, Zavfino, Elecaudio, Tomanek) + FMC (TPlink) & NAS (OMV)

The dc-atx and atx-atx loom might not be able to fit (or fit cramped) in small cases when using atx socket motherboards - that's why I use the picoPSU with the HDPlex linear in the mc300 case and use the HDP dc-atx and linear in larger cases.

Just to add my tuppence. Have the linear PSU hooked up now via the 19V, and waiting for a spare cable from Larry to connect the 5V separate to the SSD, as the cable supplied seemed to be faulty. I was certainly impressed with Larry's customer service, responding to emails quickly, and sending me out a spare DC to ATX converter when I was struggling to get the machine to power on. The only thing troubling me about it is the hum. This was mentioned right at the start of this thread though not since. It is not particularly loud, though in a silent room it is easily heard by standing next to it. It seems to fluctuate somewhat in loudness or character also. Your ear kind of "tunes in" to the sound, so I can detect it from my listening seat which is about 10-12 feet away. Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I remember at the start of this thread some mention about hum (maybe very early units?).

I was also concerned about this ... though I am unable to hear any hum ... at all ... even with my ear right next to the HD-Plex.

It is completely silent.

Did Larry make you a custom cable to connect the LPS directly to the SSD? If so that would be awesome as I need the same thing.

I have purchased two LPS's from Larry/HDPlex. The first one had some hum while the second one did not. I recently told him about the hum and he sent me a replacement without hesitation.

HDPlex has remarkable customer service.

I can warmly recommend to all HDPLex LPS owners to put other feet under the LPS! The stock feet have hardly any effect on vibration control for my taste.

I'm using these from Bfly Audio (Germany): https://shop.strato.de/epages/61924124.sf/en_US/?ViewObjectID=14072693

The positive effect was greater than I've expected. Music flows much more freely now!

Anybody else using their HDPLex LPS with different feet or supports?

Cheers, Henning

Took off the feet and placed it straight onto a piece of Aluminum plate (10mm thick) which is larger than the HD-PLex.

Apart from sounding better ... the HD-Plex feels stone cold (not that I really noticed any heat in the first place, not drawing

much power from it).

Another +1 on HD-Plex customer service. Larry is great.

I really like the look and price of the HDPlex. I'd like to try running my Audiolab MDAC off it, as well as a 9v fibre Ethernet converter. But my DAC is 15v, as it seems are a number of other DACs. Is there any way to get 15V out of this unit? Also I'd be interested to run my 2009 Mac Mini off it (the one with external power brick) which I think is 18.5V. Is that possible off the 19V port or is it too different? Basically the HDPlex seems great, but doesn't seem to match my devices...

I've only just seen this, sorry it's rather late. The 2009 Mini is perfectly happy with a well-regulated 12v, not 18.5 v. I have several old posts on Paul Hynes' site about this. I got game-changing SQ improvements on my old 2009 by doing this with PH supplies, including a 12v one.

There are also substantial improvements by going to later Minis (mine is now 2012, and the right config. of a 2014 is likely to be even better, see especially comments from Superdad), and, on these later ones, by getting rid of the electrical noise generated by the fan circuits (again, see Superdad, also tranz, and some from me).

I would recommend doing all of these before even thinking about changing power into the MDAC (I've got one also), and I would not get involved in that unless I had John Westlake's approval of what I was doing. There are several different voltages going into the MDAC; it's not easy.

It wasn't a custom cable for the SSD - just the supplied cable to connect to the 5v out, and then a molex to SATA cable which I purchased separately.

In terms of the hum, Larry did send out another PSU, and the hum was exactly the same. So I am surmising that this is perhaps "normal" for the unit - though interesting to hear that others have not noticed a hum. Maybe it's to do with the power going into the PSU? My current plan is to put the PSU in a small unit with a door adjacent to my hifi rack, which should block out any remaining hum from being heard at the listening spot. Hopefully the cooling will be OK. Larry is sending slightly longer cables to allow this.
