Synfreak
Hi! First post in the music section, but it may be of interest for some of you, so I thought I should give it a go ... A few weeks back the first set from a (complete) series of Thomas Dolbys remastered work was launched: "The Singular Thomas Dolby" Including new mastered version of his singles - the known one also as some "rarities" - accomplished with a DVD which holds a "Video retrospective" of the corresponding clips. I wasn`t very sure if I should "jump on it", because I still own most of his work (at least the albums), and I`ve made some very bad expiriences with these overcompressed/limited "remasterings" which are out there ... But, tempted by the additional DVD and the competing price (amaon.co.uk), I ordered it along with some other stuff last week. To my (great!) surprise, I must find that the remaster work is pretty well done (at Abbey Road Studios). So, no over compressed and fatiguing audio was streamed to my my ears. After some hearing I´ve also checked the levels with Wavelab, and was still be convinced that it is a really fine made remaster. To me, it seems that there was some "tuning" in the frequency domain (some of the older tracks sound a bit fuller, richer), but there is not much (added) compression to the tracks. After that, I`m really very excited to get hold of the next upcomming releases of "The Golden Age Of Wireless" and - to me the best album from TD - "The Flat Earth". All of you, that are interested in some funny - but still real good - 80ies music should consider in getting at least "The Flat Earth" as soon its released (in Europe around the 13th - sic! - july)! cornishmanc
I always liked Thomas Dolby, his production work with Prefab Sprout was also a treat. Link to comment
ted_b
I love TD. If the new remasters of the first two studio albums capture anything close to what my 12" 45 of She Blinded/Submarine had, we're in for a treat. Even "Aliens" is a fun album. icebreaker
does anyone know if the DVD has 24/96 2 channel PCM tracks? Probably not as they were released as videos back in the day...? James[br] Link to comment
Synfreak
Hi Icebreaker! I don`t think that these DVD(-video) discs will carry higher resolution audio. I haven`t got mine - but they should arrive within a few days - so I will report back what resolution they actually have. icebreaker
Today, they do not spend the money producing such hi quality vids as T. Dolby did in the early 80's. Alot of fun! Ex: "Hyperactive" > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmGxh1FhtxE&feature=channel James[br] Link to comment
