Raym87
Recently bought a couple of 'Best Of' CD's and I have to say they are virtually unlistenable. Thinking back through my modest collection it seems that quite a few of this type aren't at all very good. Are there known issues or an explaination as to why 'Best Of, 20 Golden Greats or compilations in general are rubbish. mwheelerk
I would think in many cases only The Lord knows what tapes were used as sources and what care was taken in remastering many of these. Just because they are "the original songs by the original artists" is no guarantee of the provenance of the sources. "A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open." Raym87
You could well be right. I think I will stop wasting my money on compilations. Daudio
Rhino does a good job. Their "The Very Best of Emerson Lake & Palmer" is excellent. I use track 3 as one of my demo tracks. Link to comment
Skeptic
It's not always bad. On some "Greatest Hits" albums I have, the tracks are better quality than the actual album release - but that's rare. When they take tracks from different albums, I suppose they have to account for variations in level and dynamic range between them, and the easy solution for that is probably to compress the dynamic range to match the lowest common denominator.
