Macbook Pro Retina 2013 and 24/192 optical out

Recommended Posts

While previous Macs are limited on their optical out to 96 kHz, it turns out that the 2013 Macbook Pro Retina can do 192 kHz output. I found this out by accident -- I have a 2010 Mac mini as my media server, but my main computer-for-computing is the MBPr, and I've been setting it up as a headphone listening box when it's "docked." I switched Audirvana Plus to the standard output to just listen on speakers, and lo and behold, it cheerfully reported it's streaming at 176.4 kHz. (Not that the speakers I'm streaming to are good enough for me to tell the difference.)

This is confirmed by Apple: MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013): Using 192 kHz sample rate digital audio

I don't know if this has been reported here or not, but just in case. Personally I won't be using my MBPr as a media server, but it may bode well for a future Mac mini update...

Life was so much cheaper when I couldn't hear a difference between these things.
