Receiver with rear jacks for amplified speakers

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of amplified speakers which I would like to hook up to an FM receiver. I know that any receiver with a headphone input will do this, however, because of cosmetic reasons I want to utilize hook up via the back panel of the receiver only. Please suggest a receiver. Thank you.

Any receiver with a PRE-out for the front channels will do that. Also, just about any Preamp's outputs will work just fine for you. At the low end, something like this: Product Lines > Parasound Z > Zpre2 Two Channel Zone Preamplifier perhaps?

If you are looking for a two channel receiver, a NAD BEE326 might fit the bill, as you can unhook the power amp section and use it solely as a preamp.

Thanks for your reply but I am looking for a receiver with left and right outputs in the rear that require no other work, just like a headphone jack just want a simple, plug and play." Thank you again... NAD has no FM and I will be playing just FM in the room... maybe I should have said that, apologies...

Perhaps I misunderstood the question - are you wanting to use those outputs in addition to speaker outputs? If so, then a preamp won't meet your need, and you just need a receiver with PRE-OUTS on the back. Otherwise, any stereo Preamp will do exactly what you need.

If your powered speakers require a stereo mini-jack, you will also need to but a cable to go from two RCA's to one stereo minijack.

What exactly are you looking for, and on what kind of receiver?

For example, in the NAD Receiver above, note that the Audio PreOut jacks for the Front speakers seem to be exactly what you are looking for.

Hi Paul, I never met this to get complex so here is the simplistic view of what I want to do: I want to hook up a pair of amplified speakers to the back panel of an FM Receiver. (If the headphone jack were in the rear this would be quite simple via a RCA Y converter.) I thought that there just may be an FM Receiver available that allows me to plug my speaker wire into the rear and PRESTO!. (obviously no amp used, just the pre-amp of the receiver.) Sorry for all the confusion. And thanks for your support...

Unlike regular speakers that can simply be connected to the speaker terminals of your receiver with speaker cables, powered speakers require line level inputs to their internal power amplifiers. That is why Paul is telling you that you need a receiver with PRE-outs.

The NAD C725BEE is a receiver which can have its power amplifier section disabled.

The Naim NAC-N 172XS can have a FM tuner fitted but probably does a lot more than you require being a full UPnP streamer.

If I understand you right ... what you are looking for is a pre-amp with built in tuner? You may be out of luck for the most part but an receiver which has pre-amp outputs would be possible.

I think everyone is assuming the powered speakers have mini headphone or RCA connectors on their input wires. These can be connected to preamp outputs via an adaptor without any problem.

If you are saying that you have + and - wires exposed on your powered speakers, then you will have to manually hook them up to RCA cables by soldering or otherwise, then connect the RCA cables into the preamp outputs.

Oh- now that begins to make more sense you were talking about an "FM Receiver" while I heard "receiver" as an integrated pre and power amplifier unit. Most of those come with an FM receiver built in - like the NAD I sent you a picture of.

Is this going to be the only component in the system? No computer, turntable, CD player, etc? And how much (or how little) do you want to spend?

Trying to keep the budget under $700.oo as it will be for use only for FM radio... nice jazz. Thank you one and all.

Ah- I would go with something like this Teac T-R670 Stereo FM Tuner in that case. This particular model is not current, but FM technology changes only slowly, and has not improved much since the 1970s. :)

Any stereo or multichannel receiver with a tuner in it and pre-outs will also work as well, though there you are paying for more than the just the tuner. Better volume control perhaps.

You also might be able to use the TAPE OUT jacks on some older receivers to do what you want to do as well. Might have to control volume from your speakers though.

Paul... does this tuner haved a pre-amp? Thanks again...

No, it is just pure and plainly a tuner, with a pair of RCA jacks out the back of it. You would need to control volume from your speakers.

Something like this would act nicely as tuner and preamp, but is overkill. Also the price reflects the amplification and other circuits in it.

If you don't mind buying used gear that is a little older, something like this would fill the bill for you as well:

NAD 7600 Monitor Series Stereo Receiver Tuner Preamplifier Amplifier | eBay

I don't have any idea how this would sound, but it would work. You would need a 1/4" stereo jack to dual RCA adapter (about $12).

A lot depends upon the quality you want from the FM tuner- standalone tuners are usually going to sound better, but need some form of preamp for volume control.

Perhaps the Teac and the little Z-PRE would be a really good fit for what you want. This is actually quite a fun little problem!
