Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 40th Anniversary

Recommended Posts

Has anyone downloaded the 24/96 40th anniversary edition of this album from HDTracks? There is an article in the latest edition of Stereophile on the remaster (the multi-disc bundle was actually being reviewed). It was remastered by Bob Ludwig from the original UK master tapes. Is it worth buying?

OK, so there is an earlier thread on this but I am surprised at the negative comments. Any more recent thoughts? According to the Stereophile article, this edition should be less compressed than earlier remasters.

Contrary to what was stated on the previous thread, many of the songs on the 40th Anniversary version are mastered lower with less clipping. But it wasn't totally consistent between all songs on the two versions.

In the new version, Elton John's voice is mastered at a lower level in the mix, making the instruments more prominent in comparison. Less air in the mix compared to the original HDTracks version.

I am not of the opinion that the new version is better or worse than the original download, just different.
