Streaming Network Receiver

Recommended Posts

New to this, so apologies if I get the terminology wrong...

I already have a CD based hifi and I'd like to move to something based on using my Synology NAS. My CD player is an Opus 21, which has a fairly good DAC using SP/DIF coax input, so it seems to make sense to make use of that. I also already have an iPad and I’d love to use that as the controller, with a really good app. Whilst I do have a Windows laptop, I don’t really want it involved directly in the playback. I’m not particularly interested in more than standard CD quality.

The Synology NAS has an iPad app which can control the music streaming and although it is fairly basic it’s good enough for me and it seems stable.

So, I think (I might be wrong) that I need a good quality UPnP client with coax out and a good iPad app. Sonos Controller seems to fit the bill and appears to have a great app but might be overkill. The upcoming AURALiC Aries might also be a good fit.

Alternatively, if there was a simple and cheap dumb box that just produced a digital signal for the DAC I could use the Synology iPad app or one of the UpnP Controller iPad apps (I haven’t found a really good controller app yet). I haven’t seen a box like this, although the Apple TV comes close, and way cheaper than the solutions above.

Grateful for any help.

One solution (as noted on some other threads on CA) would be to run MinimServer on your Synology NAS and the Audionet control app on your iPad. As you realise to convert the ethernet signal from your NAS to SPDIF for your DAC you will need a rendering device. From my signature you can see I use a Sonore Rendu. I am very happy with this setup - ne'er a hiccup in music playback.

ALAC iTunes library on Synology DS412+ running MinimServer with Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet running BubbleUPnP for control >

Hi-Fi 1: Airport Extreme bridge > Netgear switch > TP-Link optical isolation > dCS Network Bridge AND PS Audio PerfectWave Transport > PS Audio DirectStream DAC with Bridge Mk.II > Primare A60 > Harbeth SHL5plus Anniversary Edition .

Hi-Fi 2: Sonore Rendu > Chord Hugo DAC/preamp > LFD integrated > Harbeth P3ESRs and > Sennheiser HD800

I have a similar setup - I'm using my Synology NAS with MinimServer plus the Pioneer N30 as a renderer which is connected to my hifi chain. I control these two usually with the Kinsky app from my iPad. Sometimes I also use the Synology Audio DS server in combination with their own iPad app (for pop music mostly). For classical music, the Kinsky is better though.
