To all the Jazz fans here who have downloaded Mingus Ah Um from Acoustic Sounds.

I'm about to cave in and finally download this album. I was wondering if anyone had compared it to the 1998 redbook CD. I'm interested in knowing if it has the same mix, and level of compression.

Don't know the answer. But I do know what the DSD edition sounds like: Gorgeous, musical, brilliant. Highly recommended.

I have both. Prefer the DSD. Just a little cleaner and clearer. Can't tell you about the compression of the DSD, as we don't have a tool to measure that. But it sounds like there's no added compression.

Sony reissues mastered by Mark Wilder generally don't have added compression.

 

The 1998 CD has DR13, while a SACD rip converted to 24/88 PCM has DR14

 

I haven't compared it to the CD, but the SACD sounds very good.
