Make the adjustment range wider there than what you are going to set the volume at. If you make the range -16 to 0 then -8 is half way at 12 o'clock knob position... And leaves you some space to do adjustments on the fly as necessary.

That is just range for the volume knob in main window. I would recommend to set minimum to -16, maximum to 0. And turn the volume knob in main window to -8 dB (half way).

Hi @Miska

 

I am recommending the Pro-Ject S2 DAC (which I have and use with DSD512) to a friend.

 

 

They don't want to purchase a supercomputer for HQP so will stick with HQPe on their old existing dual core NUC-i3 up-sampling to PCM768kHz. And they will get UpBoard Gateway for NAA (like I have) which I will loan them to try PCM upsampling to the NAA.

 

What are you recommended PCM settings with Pro-Ject S2 DAC with up-sampling to PCM768k? Does dither (eg Gauss1) perform difference to noise shaping (eg NS5) at this output rate PCM768k?

 

And should we change network audio backend 'DAC bits' to 24 bits? Or leave it at default = 0 with Pro-Ject S2 DAC.

 

Not asking about sound quality but just best performance from your experience with the S2 DAC.

Just ordinary TPDF dither and default bits is fine, ESS Sabre chips take 32-bit input. Filter is then up to the listener...

I'm in agreement about not wanting any background activity.

 

I'm doing something like what you do right now, rescanning at the subdirectory level of 'classical' or 'jazz' or 'rock', which are still not very small scans..........but doable and way better than a total rescan.

 

If anyone out there wants to use the API to create a standalone smart library update/re-scan program, that would be cool.

In the meantime, I'll do the rescan on sub-directories periodically.  I'm 100% on board the HQPDControl app for my music (no more bubbleupnp which is both slow and unable to support gapless playback) so library.xml management is a new interest of mine :)

I wish I knew what it means when the HQplayer shows that it is playing but the Scrolling bar in Roon doesn’t move and there is no sound.

It happens every now and then and usually I can get past it but today I can’t. I’ve rebooted , uninstalled, reinstalled et all but same thing

Here is my setup

HARDWARE
Enclosure: Fanless solid aluminum case (completely silent) Processor: Intel i7 (kaby Lake) quad-core processor Memory: 32GB RAM DDR4 Storage: 240GB SSD (Samsung PRO) for Windows OS + Roon database etc OS: Windows 10 Pro OS (license included) USB: 4 USB ports for Keyboard, Mouse, and USB drives HDMI: for your monitor (not required once setup is complete) Network: 2 x Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 Power: 19VDC input

Running Ethernet into a Nighthawk Router and from there Ethernet to an unmanaged Ethernet switch by Netgear to an Ultra Rendu. From there USB out to the OPPO 205 as my DAC. USB NAS drive connected to the nighthawk Router.

After trying to play the HQplayer crashes and blinks. It won’t exit unless I restart the machine. In task manager it shows for a second then disappears for a second repeating.

When you uninstalled, did you check in the appropriate WindowS Prgrams folders all HQplayer content is deleted. 

I have had kind of similar problems in linux, where a specific HQplayer file needed manual removal, in order to get new install of HQplayer running correctly.

of course Windows is not Linux. But does not hurt to check if you need to re-install again.

In these screen shots it is still running. Starting a second copy will likely fail. Log file would probably help figuring out what goes wrong...

If you know you've moved items out of folder X, then since the library view is by default sorted by path, you can multi-select all items within X and click "Remove". And then "Scan tree" the X again. And then Y which is where you have moved those items to.

 

I personally have subfolders like "HDtracks", "highresaudio.com", "NativeDSD", "CD-rip", etc. And when I add new content I know I've added something for example under "highresaudio.com" so I just point scan at that folder (without removing anything form library) and then it is pretty fast. This also preserves my local metadata edits in library.xml.

 

Then in HQPDcontrol just resyncing the library is enough which is really quick too.

@Miska I guess AMD has nothing comparable to CUDA that HQPlayer could use for parallel computation?  The Radeon VII looks like a nice card.

 

It's interesting that Nvidia is finally supporting FreeSync (adaptive sync) in addition to G-Sync.  This makes it easier to choose a gaming monitor if you have an Nvidia card.

They have only OpenCL in a usable state, which is quite horrible compared to CUDA and heavily geared towards graphics with it's ties to OpenGL. So almost nobody uses it unless they are doing specifically graphics processing.

Looks like the playback started and stopped just fine. But at 48k x256 rate which is not supported by many DACs although they advertise support for it. So many times it seems like playing but output is muted. You need to set rate limit to 44.1k x256 and make sure that you don't have "Auto rate family" checked.

Question about convolution file format.  In case if conv.file is higher rate than the upsampled by HQPsound track file - does HQP downsamples conv.file to match output soundtrack file?

 

I tried trial version, 44 =>192khz upsampled track with convolution files 192 and 384kHz.  The last one appeared to sound better, but I believe that it was anyway downsampled, so... how could be? Just "illusion"?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do I know which filters will not revert to an "Auto rate family" type scenario and upsample at an even multiple?

 

I need upsample PCM (various) to fixed PCM 384 KHz only..

 

Also, if there are any suggestions for a filter that would do this with good detail, that would be much appreciated.

computer is  i7-7700T w/ 8GB

Yes, it is converted down in this case. In this case there shouldn't be much difference between using 192k or 384k file. But I recommend using the 384k file because it is better fit when used with DSD. It is high enough for any currently available PCM material without needing to covert it up, and very good also for DSD use although in that case it needs to be converted up. But it's frequency response still covers entirety of what musical content there could be on a DSD track. So it sits nicely between PCM and DSD content.

I've added this information to the table in manual. Check the ones that say "Any" as ratio.

There are various options, ranging from the slower roll-off poly-sinc-short to sharp ones like poly-sinc-xtr and poly-sinc-ext2. For PCM-to-PCM rate conversions, none of these are particularly heavy for your CPU.

So many times it seems like playing but output is muted. You need to set rate limit to 44.1k x256 and make sure that you don't have "Auto rate family" checked.

 

 

Thanks Miska - I will change that when I get home tonight. Funny that sometimes it will work with these rates and sometimes it doesn’t.

Depending on your current settings it may work when source rate is 44.1/88.2/176.4 and not work when source rate is 48/96/192...
