Dynaudio BM12A's?

Recommended Posts

Hi, and sorry for the late response. I didn't catch your question until today.

My room is 12 ft by 12 ft but it is open from behind to the rest of the open concept house. They are placed facing the open wall and are about 2 ft to back wall and 3 ft to side walls, about 6 ft apart.

I have essentially three listening positions, one is 8 ft away in the "sweet spot" then a further 6 ft away is my dining table and another 6-8 ft away is my kitchen island. I spend most of my listening time at the kitchen island since cooking is a hobby and a passion as well as audio and music is.

I can say that from all of these positions they sound fantastic. Of course the sweet spot has the imaging and best focus.

The low frequency driver has a 3.75" radiating area, 4.5" to outside of the flex surround, and 5.75" to the outside of the driver frame.

Below I will copy a review I posted on another website.

Please let me know if you have any further questions and again sorry for the delay. I really like these speakers and would like to help you decide if I can in any way possible.

I have been spouting on about active speakers and their advantages here and on another forum so I figured I better put my money where my mouth is soon. When Dynaudio introduced the Focus 110A active speaker, and when I read the review on 6moons, I just had to get my hands on these. I find the cost of most other manufacturer’s active speakers beyond my comfort level of spending (such as Adam and ATC). Meridian would require a lottery win.

After having them for about a month I can say that the Focus 110A are exceptional little speakers. I was not able to audition them so I purchased them on the basis that they are active (and Dynaudio) and therefore should be much better than my pretty good passive speakers. I was right.

I am well versed in the advantages of active speakers and used this knowledge, as well as my budget, as my guide that led me to these little gems.

For the first time I am hearing sound that does not appear to be coming from the speakers at all, but rather from between or behind them much more convincingly. Active speakers can produce a much more stable soundfield. Holographic is a word that many would use to describe the sound.

They are very resolving, cymbals have never sounded better and all instruments are just more real sounding. Very real sounding! Active speakers are less prone to frequency response errors as the crossover point does not change when the speaker impedance changes with temperature. Also, intermodulation distortion can be much lower and phase shift can be controlled in the active crossover design.

The music is sort of projected effortlessly at the listener rather than being forced with the urge to turn up the volume as with my previous speaker amp combo which are very good and would, when new, together cost nearly double what the 110A’s sell for.

They are very addictive to listen to because of their clarity and ability to separate all the instruments and voices.

They could be also be described as lean sounding but I feel it is because they don’t have that low frequency undertone that plagues many passive speakers. The bass is there, at least as much as the small woofer can reproduce, but it is so well controlled that it doesn’t hang around any longer than intended. Tight and quick might describe the bass but they do go quite low. The damping factor in an active speaker will be much higher and the “Q” of the speaker is much more stable allowing it to produce very accurate bass.

These particular speakers have two 50 watt amplifiers, one for the tweeter and the other for the woofer, in each cabinet. This may not sound like a lot of power but active speakers can produce up to 6 dB more level than passive speakers. So, these speakers could produce sound output equivalent to a 200 watt per channel amp.

I don’t know if all of the active design benefits apply to these particular speakers, such as phase correction, but I can say that I am very pleased and would highly recommend them if anyone is considering taking the active plunge especially with good sources and a preamp each of equivalent cost to these speakers or more. At least go out and have a listen, if you can find these. The Gramophone in Edmonton had a pair last time I talked to them a few months ago.

I have been waiting for an “affordable” (less than $5,000) active speaker and these are the ones for me. I have been at this hobby for well over 20 years and I think I can finally say that this is my final configuration aside from future changes to sources and preamp.

I can’t wait to try these with a good tube preamp.

I can see a pair of Dynaudio MC15’s in the future for my video system.

Active is definitely the way to go.
