davidulf Posted February 28, 2014 Share Posted February 28, 2014 I bought the 192 version Tuesday, as this is a desert island album for me. I also have the MFSL CD version and the 2000 remaster (and two old vinyl versions). I listened to all three and ran the audio analysis in JR19. It confirmed what I heard - the HD Tracks version is much louder. I'm not expert enough to try to interpret the dynamic range numbers, but I ended up preferring the MFSL and regretting the $25 spent. I can post some of the DR numbers if someone is interested and they tell me which ones ate meaningful. KDinsmore Posted February 28, 2014 Author Share Posted February 28, 2014 Yes please do post the DR. I don't own the MFSL but many others and interesting that the MFSL's to my ears are in many cases better. WINDIANRECORDS Posted February 28, 2014 Share Posted February 28, 2014 I purchased the MFSL vinyl of "Music From Big Pink", and against my own judgement, picked up the 192/24 from Acoustic Sounds as well... "Dry" would be my way of describing the 192 vs MFSL, and the musical palette that creates does not lend itself to these early recordings of The Band very well at all. I also have the MFSL of this album, and absolutely love it. "...Dixie..." is still quite possibly my favorite song, and it is absolutely haunting on this release. If you don't have an SACD player, I'd recommend still getting the MFSL CD because of the mastering chain they use, versus these Capitol releases. Link to comment

davidulf Posted March 10, 2014 Share Posted March 10, 2014 Sorry for the delay. I live in New Orleans and I just woke up from Mardi Gras. Here's my results from the HD Tracks version, then what I believe is the Deluxe Edition, and the MoFi. Opinions are now welcome... foobar2000 1.3.1 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 log date: 2014-03-10 09:08:50 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: The Band / The Band -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR10 0.00 dB -11.11 dB 2:52 01-Across The Great Divide DR9 -0.11 dB -10.91 dB 3:02 02-Rag Mama Rag DR10 -0.10 dB -12.89 dB 3:31 03-The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down DR10 0.00 dB -11.90 dB 3:12 04-When You Awake DR10 0.00 dB -11.36 dB 4:31 05-Up On Cripple Creek DR11 -0.29 dB -13.96 dB 3:56 06-Whispering Pines DR9 0.00 dB -10.15 dB 3:30 07-Jemima Surrender DR10 -0.18 dB -12.35 dB 3:41 08-Rockin' Chair DR9 -0.09 dB -10.77 dB 3:08 09-Look Out Cleveland DR9 0.00 dB -10.88 dB 4:20 10-Jawbone DR10 -0.12 dB -12.80 dB 4:15 11-The Unfaithful Servant DR10 0.00 dB -12.32 dB 3:37 12-King Harvest (Has Surely Come) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 12 Official DR value: DR10 Samplerate: 192000 Hz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 24 Bitrate: 5252 kbps Codec: FLAC ================================================================================ foobar2000 1.3.1 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 log date: 2014-03-10 09:07:05 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: The Band / The Band - Deluxe Edition -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR12 -0.07 dB -13.60 dB 2:54 01-Across the Great Divide DR10 -0.13 dB -12.21 dB 3:05 02-Rag Mama Rag DR10 -0.05 dB -12.94 dB 3:33 03-The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down DR12 -0.15 dB -13.24 dB 3:13 04-When You Awake DR11 -0.08 dB -12.47 dB 4:35 05-Up on Cripple Creek DR10 -0.10 dB -12.33 dB 3:58 06-Whispering Pines DR9 -0.07 dB -11.08 dB 3:32 07-Jemima Surrender DR12 -0.15 dB -14.28 dB 3:43 08-Rockin' Chair DR9 -0.07 dB -11.10 dB 3:10 09-Look Out Cleveland DR10 -0.26 dB -11.39 dB 4:21 10-Jawbone DR12 -0.14 dB -14.22 dB 4:17 11-The Unfaithful Servant DR11 -0.10 dB -13.83 dB 3:40 12-King Harvest (Has Surely Come) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 12 Official DR value: DR11 Samplerate: 44100 Hz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 16 Bitrate: 845 kbps Codec: FLAC ================================================================================ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: The Band / The Band (MFSL) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR13 -0.20 dB -15.44 dB 2:55 01-Across the Great Divide DR11 -2.30 dB -15.70 dB 3:05 02-Rag Mama Rag DR13 -0.21 dB -16.45 dB 3:33 03-The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down DR12 -2.53 dB -15.97 dB 3:14 04-When You Awake DR13 -0.33 dB -15.12 dB 4:35 05-Up on Cripple Creek DR11 -0.97 dB -14.77 dB 4:00 06-Whispering Pines DR11 -0.12 dB -14.73 dB 3:32 07-Jemima Surrender DR12 -3.77 dB -17.67 dB 3:43 08-Rockin' Chair DR12 -0.57 dB -14.54 dB 3:10 09-Look Out Cleveland DR13 -0.41 dB -15.90 dB 4:21 10-Jawbone DR12 -1.75 dB -16.50 dB 4:17 11-The Unfaithful Servant DR15 0.00 dB -17.66 dB 3:40 12-King Harvest (Has Surely Come) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 12 Official DR value: DR12 Samplerate: 44100 Hz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 16 Bitrate: 782 kbps Codec: FLAC ================================================================================ CAPS v3-inspired - Windows 7 64 - Micromega MyDAC - Jolida RC1000 - Aerial 5B - JL Audio Fathom 110 Link to comment
