chriznatch
I just bought a copy of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme in DSD format. The files that actually downloaded, however, show .dsf file extensions. And I can't get them to play in my Oppo. Is .dsf something different than DSD? Link to comment

It is DSD. .dsf is a "container" for the DSD file. Similar to a PCM track in the .Aiff or .wav container. I'm not sure about .dsf playback on the Oppo. How are you trying to play it on the Oppo? Is it on direct attached USB storage, or are you using a computer connected to the Oppo? Link to comment

DSD has a couple of formats: .dsf and .dff being the two. I don't have an Oppo but can tell you it is possible to change from .dsf to .dff (or the other way around). Most people prefer .dsf as it allows meta data to be stored with the file, while .dff does not. Other than that, they should be the same. I hope that holds you over until someone with an Oppo responds. Best, John P.S. I have that same download and really like it a lot! Positive emotions enhance our musical experiences. If on the Mac, try changing the output settings (or DSP settings?) in JRiver to DoP= DSD over PCM. This was required for my TEAC DAC to play the .dsf files. Hopefully someone with an Oppo can chime in. Link to comment

Cued up the Coltrane, but got an error message saying something went wrong with playback. Then I changed the output encoding back to normal, and changed bitstream to DSD. Again, error message. This guide from Schitt on how to play DSD files through their Loki DSD DAC may point you in the right direction: Schiit Audio, Headphone amps and DACs made in USA. FWIW, I have no problem playing DSF from JRiver to the Loki DAC connected to my Mac. baddog
Long discussion on DSD, JRMC and OPPO here, not sure what model you have. DSD streaming to OPPO BDP-103/105 - DFF and DSF files Net-net it should work off of a locally attached USB Drive into the OPPO. If it is one of the latest generation (103, 103D, 105, 105D), the easiest and fastest way is to put the file(s) on a USB flash drive and plug it into the front panel USB receptacle. You then select that as the music source and the selections should appear on-screen. Finally, select track(s) and hit play. Should be in the user's manual. roboss38
The 105D will do DSD via the Asynchronous USB, but not the 105. You can stream DSD via SMB, or play DSD via a USB flash drive. Both sound great. I've used the flash drive approach before, but my problem yesterday was that I was trying to stream the DSD from my computer in the same way I'm streaming FLACs (using JRiver). I now understand that the Oppo doesn't support that kind of playback. So that's why I couldn't get them to play. It's just a function of me not completely understanding the Oppo or the various file formats yet. Thanks for the info, and I'll use the flash drive for DSDs going forward. Link to comment

I keep all my DSD files on a remote but networked drive and the Oppo 105 can access via the network and play them without jRiver. However, one must use SMB and not DLNA. The 103 will not, however (I have one of those as well). Mark Link to comment

Right. There is no async USB input on the 103 but I never use the one on my 105, anyway. Kal Rubinson Senior Contributing Editor, Stereophile Link to comment
