burnspbesq Posted January 22, 2014 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Not in the mood today to plunk down USD 25 for a high-res download whose provenance is completely unknown and undocumented (as far as I can tell). Maybe tomorrow. I am a huge Crowded House fan. Office: MacBook Pro - Audirvana Plus - Resonessence Concero - Cavailli Liquid Carbon - Sennheiser HD 800. integriscdp Posted January 22, 2014 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Has anyone compared this to the old DVD-A or Dual Disc? The old DVD-A does not contain a stereo track. It has a 5.1 96/24 surround mix. My digital 'reference' for this album has always been the Japanese EMI Black Triangle (CP32 catalog # series). It sounds really good to my ears. Link to comment
Synfreak Posted January 23, 2014 Share Posted January 23, 2014 The old DVD-A does not contain a stereo track. It has a 5.1 96/24 surround mix. IIRC, the DVD-Audio also contains a a "Video_TS" folder (DVD-Video), which does offer a 96kHz/24Bit Stereo programm. And i think it was also quite compressed. I try to get the DR ratings of it, if i can find it ;-) Esoterc SA-60 / Foobar2000 -> Mytek Stereo 192 DSD / Audio-GD NFB 28.38 -> MEG RL922K / AKG K500 / AKG K1000 / Audioquest Nighthawk / OPPO PM-2 / Sennheiser HD800 / Sennheiser Surrounder / Sony MA900 / STAX SR-303+SRM-323II Link to comment

Thanks for the info. I was never a big fan of the surround mix, so it's safe to assume that I would be no fonder of the stereo mix. Looks like the Japan EMI Black Triangle CD will continue to be my reference. Link to comment
millifoo Posted January 30, 2014 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Thanks for the info! I think i'll buy first press rebook cd from the 80s I recommend hunting down the 3-cd box set (printing in the 90s), I think pressed in Holland. It has a slightly different running order for the first album, and the one big improvement is that the first guitar strum of "Something So Strong" isn't chopped (albeit it's only a few milliseconds chopped off on the domestic release - I never even noticed until I bought the box set).
