The Computer Audiophile
Music Direct just announced a pre-order for the new Wadia 170 iTransport. The only non-modified devices to take a digital signal straight from an iPod. Plug this into your DAC and you'll have bit-perfect sound. The cost from MD is $379. tfarney
This product came up the other day on another site, and while I understand the desire to get your iTunes files into a system without going through the dac and op amps of your iPod, wouldn't it actually be less expensive and a lot more flexible to send your whole iTunes library to that room wirelessly? Airport Extreme $179 Airport Express $79 Total $258 iTransport $379 That extra $121 isn't going to break the bank, and it's an elelgant solution, but still, getting access to all the tunes your hard drive will hold, plus a wireless music server system in the deal, all for $121 less? What am I missing (again)? Tim I confess. I\'m an audiophool. Link to comment
The Computer Audiophile
I think you are thinking very logical and I do agree with you. Plus, there is no way to navigate the menu without getting up and switching songs on your iPod. You can also move your music wirelessly with an Airport Express only, making the price difference even larger. Still a cool concept that many people are waiting for. jimim
We are going to the Apple store tomorrow cause I want to get a case for my iPhone and a minijack to TOS converter cause I can't decide on a DAC yet so I'm using my Marantz for DAC via TOS at this point. I really want to get an airport express but don't know if I'm going to like this whole music server thing from just using CD's. Using the airport express is really a great great way to get your computer out of the room though. I also agree about the control aspect of the iTransort though. jim Link to comment
tfarney
Yeah, I need the Extreme to replace my Linksys hub, so I can run the hard drive that holds my iTunes from the laptop anywhere in the house. Too bad you can't hook a hard drive to an Airport Express. Then I could get my interface to the main system and control all of iTunes from my laptop just by moving the hard drive to the den. The Computer Audiophile
Once you get the Extreme and are able to listen to your whole library from anywhere in your house you'll love it. I'll never go back to anything else. The Express has a USB port but Apple has only enabled USB printer sharing from this port. An external hard drive option would be fabulous.
