Are we living in the Golden Age of the Jazz Piano Trio?

Recommended Posts

I registered on CA so I could get some information on FLAC players...and then I saw this thread. I mainly listen to piano trios, so reading through this thread will be fun.

Well, here are my first recommendations: Ismael Dueñas Trio and Glerum Omnibus.

I'll post more after I read the whole thread.

Edit: I thought I was familiar with just about any modern trio on Earth...and just by reading the first page I was able to discover six new artist I did not know existed. Thanks to the posters in this thread.

That's exactly the purpose of this thread. Will check out both your recommendations when I get back home. Hope they are on Qobuz. Hadn't heard of either of them.

Here are two that I recently discovered: Alex Mercado Trio and Dominic J Marshall.

Both are great musicians\composers.

Edit: Since you seem to like Italian musicians...two more: Cesare Picco and Gabriele Pezzoli Trio.

And I'll throw in a guy from France just for fun: Remi Panossian.

Do you have any specific albums you'd recommend?

Glerum Omnibus and the Neil Cowley Trio are probably my favorite piano trios. I say they are my favorite because I never get tired of hearing their albums no matter how many times I play them.

If I had to recommend one album from each, I would say:

Neil Cowley: Live at Montreux 2012

Glerum Omnibus: Omnibus One

Cesare Picco: My Room

Ismael Dueñas Trio: Jazz Ateu

Alex Mercado: Symbiosis

Dominic J Marshall: Spirit Speech

Gabriele Pezzoli Trio: Rendez-vous

Remi Panossian: Add Fiction

And here are some of my favorites (from artists not mentioned in this thread):

Thierry Mailard: Beyond the Ocean

Dan Tepfer Trio: Before the Storm

Maria Kannegaard: Camel Walk

Jack Pescod: Circles

Rembrandt Frerichs: Continental

Igor Prochazka: Easy Route

Robert Mithchell 3io: The Embrace

Andrew McCormack Trio: Live in London

Christoph Stiefel: Live!

Mark Perrenoud Trio: Logo

Stefano Bollani: Mi Ritorni In Mente

Adrian Frey Trio: Microcosmos

Nikolaj Hess: Playin'

Benoit Greslebin: Pop

Tim Allhoff: Prelude

Peter James Trio: Soul Story

GoGo Penguin: V2.0

British Jazz Trio from Manchester. Have been enjoying the album immensely.

As the name suggests this is their second album. One of the better albums of the year.

Review from All About Jazz: GoGo Penguin: v2.0

I love GoGo Penguin. I saw them in concert two years ago in Paris.

After the show my girlfriend introduced herself to them and had a nice chat (and I didn't go with her because I didn't want to look like a groupie :( ).

Thanks for sharing. Was travelling and didn't have time to check any of them out. My latest discovery on Qobuz: Igor Gehenot Trio's "Motion".

I own both his albums -- pretty good stuff.

Definitely try to check out Edgar Knecht. I can't stop listening to his music. That's all I've been playing for the past two days. Wow...just wow!!!

Great review.

I'm glad you are adding more Jazz to the blog.

You have no idea how obsessed I am with piano trios. My list of so long that it will take me a while to put it together (so I can post it here). I want to categorize it by how good the artist or album is (as opposed to just posting a huge list of groups\artist).

Link to comment

Well, I tried to put an organized list together but it was taking too much time, so I'm posting a huge list instead. This is a list of my favorite albums, the music I download to my phone and is always with me. I labeled (genre) these albums as Modern Jazz - almost all of them were released this century. Most of these are piano trios, but there are some quartets in there...and some duos (piano and bass).

I'll put another list together with other piano trios I labeled as "Jazz", "Contemporary Jazz", and "Classic Jazz". Those albums were released before 2000.

Link to comment
After that last list - we now know! Holy molly what a list!

... and you have more.

And then some. I have a couple of playlists on Spotify and Tidal (as long as the one posted above) of trios that I have not been able to fully digest. I just clicked on a couple of songs, liked what I heard, and saved them to a playlist so I can go back and listen to the full album when I finally get a chance.

I suppose this helps answer Musicophile's question: It does seem that we are living in the golden age of the piano trio.

If not a golden age, it is definitely a great time for those who like to hear three dudes playing the piano, bass, and drums.

Link to comment

These are from "Contemporary Jazz". The albums are recent releases. Again, mostly piano trios with an exception here and there.

The artists on these two lists are included due to the fact that they are exceptionally talented (IMO), because they are playing original compositions, or because they were in the zone when they made these recordings.

Well I'm basing my assessment on sales and sales aren't everything and not the sole determinant of whether we are in a golden age of a particular genre or sub genre of music .

There is some truth to your belief of the jazz piano golden age . Sales are just one factor .

Just because people aren't listening

doesn't mean it's not a golden age.

I have not kept up with sales figures. How are classical music sales compared to jazz?

Link to comment
I have found this link to sales data from 2013 (article in German) which has Jazz at 1.8% of worldwide album sales, way even behind classical. Access to the whole article is not free so I don't know the source.

I wonder how these artists manage to survive. Do they have a second job, or do live gigs pay enough to scrape a living? I hope they are doing better with streaming revenue.

Since they are not doing for the money, it makes me appreciate their albums even more since they are playing jazz for the love of the music.

Link to comment
Have started going through this list. So far have heard Aaron Diehl, Bob Mahmet, Julia Hülsmann, Jeff Hamilton & Helge Lien, so much more to do.

I'm just curious you don't have Shai Maestro in your list. I really like the guy and just wrote about him on my blog. His drummer is Ziv Ravitz (you have him in the list above): Shai Maestro – This Avishai Cohen Alumni Will Go Places | musicophilesblog – from Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms

I have both his albums, and I'm waiting to buy his new one. I didn't put him on the list because he had already been mentioned in this thread. I didn't know he was discovered by Cohen...and I didn't know Cohen was discovered by Corea.

I seem to recall someone mentioning Kekko Fornarelli in this thread somewhere. I have just found him! I've ripped both 'Room full of mirrors' and 'Outrush' from CDs. On the outrush rip, to my ears several of the tracks appear to be distorted, especially the second half of track five, 'what kept you so late'. I don't have the facility to play the cd natively and was just wondering if anyone else had noticed this. I tried ripping it in XLD and dbPoweramp both rips have the issue and now wondering if I should try and return the cd for a refund as it detracts somewhat from the overall listening experience.

Thanks

Paul

I just listened to the track on Apple Music. There is distortion, but I think it is intentional. Kekko is doing an EST impression of sorts.

While I would agree, don't forget to add Monty Alexander, who IMHO is the best jazz piano player alive today

His music is infectious. After his live performances, the crowd leaves the club dancing. I know, I have done it myself!

+1

I started to seriously listen to piano trios because of artists like Medeski Martin & Wood (I suppose they introduced me to the possibilities of a Jazz trio), and then Dave Brubeck and Monty Alexander.

I don't know if Monty Alexander is the best jazz piano player alive today...but he certainly deserves an honorable mention.
