Are we living in the Golden Age of the Jazz Piano Trio?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Wonderful idea to start that kind of thread. Maybe would be also nice to put which ones are in hi rez and really benefit from that.

One of my favs are:

Vassilis Tsabropoulos, Arild Andersen & John Marshall - Achirana

Vassilis Tsabropoulos, Arild Andersen & John Marshall - Triangle

Marcin Wasilewski Trio - January

Anat Fort Trio - And If

Anat Fort Trio - A Long Story

Tord Gustavsen Trio - The Ground

This on is not Trio, but Qartet, but latest Julia Hulsmann In Full View album is excellent.

I need to check out Mr Tsabropoulos (Greek I presume?).

Yes. He has also some solo piano albums and classical work with Anja Lechner "Gurdjieff Chants, Hymns and Dances" - the last one is also my favorite. Let me know if you like him?

+1 for Marcin Wasilewski Trio, but with the January preference - better sonics and more relaxed performance IMHO. Been listening him over few day lately.

highly recommended.

+1 for performance, but sonics little bit dull for me without feelings of the space.

By the way, you can listen to his albums in streaming on Mirabassi's own website, e.g.:

One comment from my side - Architectures are the outstanding piece of work! What a discovery!

I may add to this thread:

Stefano Battaglia Trio - The River of Anyder

Stefano Battaglia Trio - Songways (****)

Snip from http://player.ecmrecords.com/stefano-battaglia-trio:

Battaglia’s canvas is broader than ‘jazz’, and he has always drawn influence also from arts beyond music. Some of the allusions here: “Ismaro”, or Ismarus, is the city Odysseus attacks in Homer’s account of his long journey home. The “Mildendo Wide Song” is, Battaglia says, inspired by Jonathan Swift’s description of the capital of Lilliput in Gulliver’s Travels. Title track “Songways” pays homage to Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, and “Armonia” takes its cue from Charles Fourier’s utopian Theory of The Four Movements, while “Abdias” is named for the novella by Adalbert Stifter. The free floating “Vondervotteimittis” alludes to the clock-obsessed town in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Devil In The Belfry. “Monte Analogo”, Mount Analogue, is the title and destination of Renée Daumal’s surrealist book. “Perla” is a city in Die Andere Seite (The Other Side) the novel by Austrian expressionist illustrator Alfred Kubin. And the “Babel Hymn”, of course, references the Genesis story of the Tower of Babel and God’s confounding of the Earth’s language. These are amongst the sources that fire Stefano Battaglia’s imagination.

Another Polish trio I have on my tentative shopping list is this one:

Marek Jakubowski Trio: My Own | Marek Jakubowski Trio*– Télécharger et écouter l'album

Marek Jakubowski: My Own (24/44).

Does anybody have it yet?

Nope, but I've just ordered the CD waiting for delivery.

Great album! Many thanks for the recommendation. Superb sound quality, better than some of the high-res material I might add!

Welcome.

Hi,

for those of you wishing to spend even more money my suggestion is:

Mats Eilertsen Trio - Sails Set (2013). It comprises a lot of interesting compositions, and what is even more, the whole CD is excellently recorded.

Hope, you enjoy it.

Uwe

highly improvisational …and it's available in 24/96 here: Sails Set (24bit) by Mats Eilertsen Trio | GubeMusic

I like more their first Elegy album. Only in redbook, but more jazzy - more like Bobo Stenson's some albums.

Thanks for starting this thread! As others have attested, it's introduced me to a lot of new artists I otherwise never would have heard of. I've ordered a few of these from Amazon, and I'm anxious to hear them. Finally, I haven't seen a mention of the 'Camp Meeting' album by Bruce Hornsby, Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette; I'd highly recommend it. Excellent recording, as well.

Man, amazing stuff! Do you have more like this ;-) It is REAL JAZZ.

I would like to add something: Somehow my ears felt irritated listening to this CD, signalizing me that something was not "correct" with it. So after i n v e r t i n g the songs it is even more pleasure to listen to them. Most of what I "critisized" has become untrue.

Maybe you can check it out easily if you own a DAC with such a feature. I don´t, so I have done it with a software called SoX:

Happy Easter,

Uwe

Yes, I've noticed the same - when I inverted polarity in A+ globally it sounds better, weird? Is it any option to invert polarity in A+ only for this album? I know that I can do it globally and also I can put INVERTPOLARITY in comment section, but where is that comment section? Is it enough to put this regex in iTunes comment when using proxy or I can add it into the FLAC file permanently somehow?

EDITED:

OK, I figured it out. To put this tag into iTunes comments it's not enough, A+ won't recognize it. You can use XLD and reconvert the files and embed than INVERTPOLARITY tag in XLD metadata section. It works.

While we are spending more of what we don't have, highly recommend Marialy Pacheco piano Jazz trio (Marialy on piano, electric bass, drums). There's a Cuban influence, with classical and rhythmic jazz. Not too acquainted with the purists of Jazz genres, so the description is a little rough from my end, but I really like this music, has structure, fusion, or even progressive rock!

Recorded this year in Germany, a 96/24 sounds like DSD, it's delicious, nice DR, great image, very clean recording.

Here's a link. Available from highresaudio.com

Enrico Pieranunzi has recently release a new album, called Stories:

I wouldn't call it his best album ever, but it is still a sold 4* performance worth checking out.

You can download it directly from the label here:

Listened to it this morning in the car, very nice. I'd certainly recommend it.

Cannot comment on SQ as travelling right now.

Hello Musicophile,

It sounds quite interesting, however I listened over the qobuz website, so wondering how do you rate the sound on hifi system? It's on the border of jazz/fusion I guess, but melodic without too much improvisation.

Am away from my hifi for the moment traveling, can only judge the sound via my B&W C5 iphone headphones, and it doesn't seem to be particularly audiophile. Great music though.

Yes, my feeling was the same, good music, but not so good sound - quite loud and compressed.

FYI, early next year will be the release of Giovanni Mirabassi's new album No Way Out.

I had the immense pleasure of seeing him and his trio live some weeks earlier this year and he was already playing tracks from the album, so i expect this to be a masterpiece.

Very, very good news. I've seen it scheduled for 27th of January.
