wappinghigh
I am streaming DSD, both stereo and multichannel straight to an Oppo off a NAS (sure it's still an smb mount, but I'm doing it right now). I'm also streaming DSD from the same NAS file via UPnP using PlugPlayer running on OSX to an Invicta. (sure it's via Dop/USB ). But again I'm doing this now.. So it's great that more DSD content might become available. Point is, it's great Sony has come on board with direct DSD file playback, but are they really up to speed with what can be done via SMB and UPnP? I agree. What's with all the inbuilt HDD storage on these players? Is this really the future of computeraudio??.. it looks early 2000 tech to me.. not 2013... wappinghigh
^ It's not like I don't like inbuilt storage in players....For years I have been saying Sonos should have had a primary Zone player like that HAP-Z1ES.. something with inbuilt storage (so folks who don't have a NAS setup don't need that additional hassle) Something that could act as both a direct player itself..but also be a UPnP/Sonosmesh share for a multiroom set up... That's why I got so excited seeing this Sony lineup. Just maybe it could be set up that way..?? ..Also given it's DSD and 24/192 capable..but the more I hear about things, the more I feel they just don't have the vision to make this sort of UPnP thing happen. Maybe I'll be proven wrong as the roll out get's underway, but I totally don't understand why you wouldn't plan for this from the outset.. because it would involve selling more and more peripheral Sony players (like that HAP-S1) as folks expand their systems into different rooms.. Anyway.. what do I know I guess.. ?? New simplified setup: STEREO- Primary listening Area: Cullen Circuits Mod ZP90> Benchmark DAC1>RotelRKB250 Power amp>KEF Q Series. mayhem13
Hmm...Yawn. Player...boring. Can build better. Content...same old garbage. Well with the push of Sony, either HiRes content WILL expand exponentially OR the listening public will reject HiRes downloads once and for all which will subdue any future remastering for a very long time If not forever. Time will tell...I expect we'll know better in 24 months or so. Sales of DSD downloads will determine its fate. Link to comment
One and a half
Previous Sony HDD players never quoite set the world on fire. Either the HDDs were too small, had a lot of difficulty in transferring tracks from existing systems, supported lossy codecs only. Worst of all was to allow only ATRAC DRM files, so that threw portability and exchange with other devices out the window. They aren't a stranger to making media storage devices, just they haven't made a successful one (yet). At least the 2013 models have no DRM involved, so it seems a lesson learned. As for streaming, they aren't there (yet). The Ethernet ports or wireless is only the gateway to transfer files from computers to the device. A backup function would be nice, but no details given on that. AS Profile Equipment List Say NO to MQA Link to comment
sandyk
I doubt that Sony , that is pretty well on "life support", and almost certainly pruning engineering staff sections and levels is going to be too adventurous. There may even be some outsourcing involved ? If DSD is to succeed , it will almost certainly be due to the efforts of "Blue Coast" and others. Just making back catalogue from SACD heydays available again isn't what's needed. What's needed are new general releases where the guys in suits haven't told the Recording and Mastering Engineers to make it all sound as loud as possible. Alex Not sure you're even on the same planet Alex....a boutique DSD mastering salon is not the highway for DSD everywhere. If the mass market does not purchase DSD content ( and the mass market doesn't listen to what Blue Coast is selling), well......that's that. The positive here isn't Sony's players, it's Sony's media marketing influence. Link to comment
sandyk
Where have Sony said anything about providing NEW mass market DSD releases ? At this stage, I would suspect that it is wishful thinking by many. Are they also going to turn back the clock on the "Loudness War" that started around 1985 ? What makes people believe that even HDTracks is viable long term either, without NEW high resolution releases, not just re-releases of 16/44.1 material that many of us bought >25 years ago ? sandyk
What matters is a kind of cyberspace collaborative of mankind has done this, and finally Sony has accepted that there is no going back.. The same applied to the vinyl resurgence. When DSD sales outstrip Vinyl sales, which are still 5/8 of S.F.A. in comparison with CD and DLs ,then we MAY be starting to get somewhere. Has Sony REALLY accepted it, or is it just another "toe in the water"marketing exercise that will eventually go the same way as mainstream SACD and DVD-A releases ? mav52
Sony, makes you wonder if there is something lying under the desk that makes one purchase their equipment to be able to enjoy this offering. Sony never gave away anything. This whole thing with these download sites not being able to offer music in certain countries has to do with licensing and distribution. It looks like HD Tracks does not have a license to distribute their material to certain countries.. Maybe they got caught selling to other countries and someone put a halt to it.. No doubt is has to do with funds $$ "For a digital store to sell music, it must have the song files on its own hard drives/servers – this allows the store to control the customer experience, provide customer support and control the shopping cart and check out process. When a song is bought or played on-line, it is the digital store that is fulfilling the download or stream; this is where the problem is. For a digital store to legally fulfill a stream or download it must get global licenses and make direct payments to copyright holders or the entities that represent them." http://musicians.about.com/od/musicindustrybasics/f/distribution.htm http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/foreignlicensing.htm http://blog.tunecore.com/2011/05/the-three-licenses-holding-back-the-music-industry.html And here is an example in Aussie land. http://www.aria.com.au/pages/licensing-faq.htm The Truth Is Out There Link to comment
