One and a half
The Sony players look as though they are ready to go with minimal efforts, and that's a great stepping stone for those that have had it with MP3. It's a good transition, since opting for a PC with a DAC and amp for the newbies is very overwhelming, all that can come later. Here's a solution in the one box, looks like it's hackable with different hard drives, that will appeal to the adventurous, and the models with network are an add on to an existing DLNA type home movie server approach, HRA is a natural extension to that and also ready to go. Whether it will do gapless, we will have to wait. Let's see what Sony Japan website has behind curtain #2.... AS Profile Equipment List Say NO to MQA Link to comment
One and a half
Are you all saying that converting everything to DSD is the way to go? A resounding yes. With the flexibility to do the conversion in software or in the DAC gives you the choice. So far the software route wins for me, with PCM2DSD in software, for even a very modest DAC in a KORG-DS-10 sounds ver, very engaging. If that fails, (most) high end DSD DACs convert everything to DSD128 (except the new Ayre DAC). AS Profile Equipment List Say NO to MQA Link to comment
One and a half
Hmm...Yawn. Player...boring. Can build better. Content...same old garbage. If you would have stated, in this thread, "I have heard x DSD DAC compared with y DAC for a time, but it didn't do anything for me because of a, b c, " then we have a discussion. Simply being obstinate without any positive technical/objective/subjective is contempt. Please, ffs, being polite here, offer some valid reasons for your armchair attitude. One and a half
There's a Chinese idiom I learnt recently: "When one dog barks at a shadow, a hundred others join in." I could add "Only fools rush in" but that's to be taken in jest. If you stop every time a dog barks, then your road will never end. (Arabic) AS Profile Equipment List Say NO to MQA Link to comment

One and a half
Previous Sony HDD players never quoite set the world on fire. Either the HDDs were too small, had a lot of difficulty in transferring tracks from existing systems, supported lossy codecs only. Worst of all was to allow only ATRAC DRM files, so that threw portability and exchange with other devices out the window. They aren't a stranger to making media storage devices, just they haven't made a successful one (yet). At least the 2013 models have no DRM involved, so it seems a lesson learned. As for streaming, they aren't there (yet). The Ethernet ports or wireless is only the gateway to transfer files from computers to the device. A backup function would be nice, but no details given on that. AS Profile Equipment List Say NO to MQA Link to comment
