Special remark to ivdz:

in Belgium it is NOT legal to rip borrowed CD’s for private use.

In fact, legislation is even not clear if you can rip CD’s for other reasons than backup. I.e. ripping CD’s for using them on a music server is nor allowed, neither forbidden from a legal point of view.

So we do it the typical belgian way, we just go along as long as government does not take any action.

 

By the way, I have run a ripping service for about 4 years in Belgium. Not a sustainable business if delivering good metadata quality, especially with classical music of foreign languages. (I even searched for Chinese metadata copying/pasting  it , without having a real clue what information I was dealing with)
