Haven't read already this thread completely, but until now I could't find a solution for the following problem:

- MQn is playing sound, but when trying to use the commands (eg. spacebar) mqnplay.exe terminates with an error (appcrash).

Christoph

Christoph,

the crash is an anticipated behaviour at the moment. see thread #159 dated 17 Juyly 2013.

Uploaded 2.53 sse4 intel eac which uses the eac counter instead of rax, takes it down to normal highs and lows also passes the crackling low noise test.

This version is good enough, I'll build a 1.x and 3.x version of it later.

Don't even know if it is worth spending any more time trying to put the complete render loop in assembly, this version is so good.

Uploaded MQn.bat which allows files with unicode characters in their names to play, although the characters are not displayed correctly, it's good enough for now. Am playing my William Carter - Fernando Sor Late works at the moment which I haven't been able to do before.

2.53 sse4 intel eac

pretty much everything has improved. best in most things.

tune is light. hope it be stronger. also sound got less mellow. can sound slightly hard/harsh in female vocal/treble. just hope that it sounds as mellow as rax no zi.

never thought a PC could sound this good. thx sbgk.

have bought a haswell laptop so will be interesting to see what 256 bit streaming loads and writes sound like + the other improvements

very good write up here

interesting statistics from the blog, who in the world is reading it, didn't realise there were so many Indonesian audiophiles, maybe it's a data aggregator or something

Hi SBGK,

haven't listened for a week after the listening session with friends at my place.

They where amazed by the very good sound quality coming from an 'un-tweaked', standard server 2012 install.

And they where VERY IMPRESSED (!) by the sound quality coming from MQN.

Much credits for SBGK !!

But there has been again much progress in only one week.

Version mqnplay.exe 2.52 sse4 intel v2 sounds great.

On my system:

* the high's are much better now.

In most MNQ versions high's where a little to bright on my system.

Especially S's and T's sounded with too much "Sssssss" en too much "Ttttttt".

If you know what I mean.

* resolution also has gone up again.

More details, more musical texture.

Especially in bass and lower mid regions there are much more details and there's much better musical texture.

This might sound as if there is less bass.

But only the mud and blur is gone.

There's definitely enough bass in my system.

* 3D/soundstage.

I also read comments about 3D/soundstage.

I think that's a very tricky one.

3D/soundstage is easily confused with an 'open', 'airy' sound style.

The latter can be easily added in the mixing/mastering process by adding some: reverb(aration)/echo/delay.

When adding a litlle of this, a recording or PA sounds less dry, more open, etc.

I like what 2.52 sse4 intel v2 is doing here.

But I don't know if i'm listening too the truth, nothing but the truth (soundwise)

But hey, I like it.

I read you bought a new labtop.

Do you intend too run server 2012 (trail version 180 day's) somehow?

(beside the original OS on the laptop)

I ask because server 2012, really sounds A LOT better than WIN8.

Do try too run server 2012 (trail version 180 days) from an additional partition or external bootable HDD/SSD so you can hear the sound quality yourself.

I boot and run server 2012 from an external USB3.0 HDD as described here.

Creating a Non-Certified Windows To Go USB Drive » ADMIN Magazine

(substitute in the text 'WIN8' for 'Server 2012')

Cable Modem/Router < Cat 7 -> Netgear Switch GS108Ev3 -> Cat 7 (25 meters) -> 2nd NIC on Thunderbolt -> Mac Mini (HD-plex -> Uptone DC-Conversion / Linear Fan Controller Kit (MMK), OSX on SD-card, Wifi-module physically removed, SSD unplugged from power and SATA, Audirvana, Sonarworks Room EQ).
* Mac Mini -> Cat 7 -> Merging Hapi -> Vovox Mucolink D-sub 25 Direct SD 100 -> Vovox Direct SD XLR -> PMC TwoTwo.8
* Mac Mini -> Supra USB 2.0 -> Crane Song Solaris -> Vovox Direct S XLR -> PMC TwoTwo.8
All LAN cable: ISTP Belden Cat.7 1885ENH with Telegartner MFP8 Cat 6a RJ45 plugs.
LAN shield connected at both ends to plug. Modem & switch powered with Linear PSU.
All interconnections: Vovox.

i use these usb3 sticks for server installs

Sandisk 16GB Cruzer Extreme USB3 0 USB 3 0 Memory Stick High Speed CZ80 Drive | eBay

i find them as fast and as good for sound quality if not better than ssd

clean and format as markvandepas linked above

then follow this guide

just another option i suppose

also server R2 2012 is good too

tried 2,53 rax cp

didnt do comparative testing vs earlier versions. detail and timing at its best

i am a bit of a detail junkie, this gets my admiration but bass feel seems to be lacking.bass weight is 99% not a big issue

fails to invoke a full emotional response which is the whole point of listening to music i think this is a bass element missing

what you guys think?

in fairness now its excellent!!!!

Uploaded 2.53 sse4 intel rax cp, same settings as JC's favourite rax no zi, seems to work - the eac version lost too much off the top end...

11 versions 2.52 & 3 versions 2.53: problem with soundstage has not improved, still a bit narrow, but bass volume has improved.

2.52 movdqa align 8 sw prefetch intel & 2.52 movdqa align 8 hw prefetch intel have ~ good soundstage, OK. their SQ is OK, sound is most open, airly (but 3Dwidth normal), free.

2.53 sse4 intel rax cp have normal bass volume, good vibration (<~ rax no zi), sound is mellow but need more open, airly (no buff, rax no zi & 2.53 sse4 intel rax cp have similar mellow sound, but soundstage is not good => not open, airly, free).

2.52 movdqa align 8 sw prefetch intel: bass vibration OK ~ no buff/rax no zi, soundstage OK, sound is mellow, stereo effect OK (>~ v1.2), proportion of bass/mid/treble volumes OK (total volume a bit more), brightness normal, vocal focus normal (?), low noise, clearly, sound have good texture on 3 frequency ranges, depth. why is it soft? good SQ (i think is not caused by 3D effect, sound width is normal). total volume a bit more but keeped SQ, OK. emotion or not?

2.52 movdqa align 8 sw prefetch intel is better than others.

think 2.53 eac has better timing and details. 2.53 rax cp is not better, only mellower.

2.53 eac is actually pretty damn elegant. it is clean/airy/fast/clear/detail. need to be mellower to sound comfortable on headphone. on speaker, it is fine. it doesn't have a rich sounding like 2.49 no buf. it has thinner & most detail sounding. no rax zi has fuller sound, more emotion, more simple&enjoyable stage.

and don't forget about 2.52v2. it sounds halfway between 2.53 eac and no rax zi.

actually don't think i heard a version yet that is fast and rich and full

give up R2 once again. tune is suppressed and control. i add about 200 threads (by starting apache and mysql), SQ deteriorates as fast as 7/2008. i suspect R1 has a 'better' OS kernel, for now and for me... R1 has micro-details in stressful situation. R2 losses them. maybe i forgot some tweaks...

R2 has a number of new category settings etc which may be affecting the sound if MQn is not in an optimal one also it may benefit from being built in win8.1

2.52v2 sound is open, free on ears, volume normal. but brightness i think is more, bass vibration not like as rax no zi.

i like 2.52 movdqa align 8 sw prefetch intel. brightness: rax no zi < 2.52 movdqa align 8 sw prefetch intel < 2.52v2. its vibration is good ~ rax no zi/no buff, so mellow. but unfortunately, total volume too more, i think affect to SQ, feel its sound have breaking. what do you think, could you do test it?

@LowOribit, @iori

Thanks for your help. Good to know that no further investigation is needed ...

But do you know a way to get rid of the error message when mqnplay.exe has completed playing the loaded tracks?

@sbkg

Maybe I've missed something, but if it's fact, that the commands are not supported (except the x), why are they still shown in console window? And in mqnreadme.txt the commands are also still noted. That's a bit confusing und hard to understand, if one didn't follow the whole thread.

But I don't want to grumble only ;-)

I've tried MQn in a Single PC Setup with Windows Server 2012 (GUI), optimized by Phil's Audiophile Optimizer. The sound MQn produces is really excellent!

so what are you getting from MQn over other players ? does digital noise give the impression of speed ? rich and full - there is still the large memory pages to try which will presumably make it sound a bit like JPlay. Would be good to tabulate your findings so that it's easier to compare versions and their differences, any volunteers ?

I suppose MQn is giving a natural presentation with surprising amout of detail and dynamics from 16/44.1 material with a low noise background, at it's best it is an absorbing experience where you are actually interested in the next note/vocal intonation that is going to be played, I guess that is what emotional involvement is as opposed to don't really care for this song, it's just noise.

yes. need internet... it is better to optimize the TCP/IP setting than disabling internet...

here is my setting:

C:\Users\Administrator>netsh int tcp show global

Querying active state...

TCP Global Parameters

----------------------------------------------

Receive-Side Scaling State : enabled

Chimney Offload State : disabled

NetDMA State : disabled

Direct Cache Access (DCA) : disabled

Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level : disabled

Add-On Congestion Control Provider : none

ECN Capability : disabled

RFC 1323 Timestamps : disabled

Initial RTO : 1000

Receive Segment Coalescing State : enabled

i disabled auto-tuning to stop OS from monitoring network activity. be careful, you might need to manually set mtu. for my ISP, i use mtu=1492. the default is 1500.

you may considering tweaking Receive-Side Scaling(RSS) State or disabling it. when RSS is enabled, all cores are used to handle network activity. you can set it one core to handle the internet. it makes sense for MQn, since you prefer a dedicated core for MQn. I left it enabled because it is better for XA.

by the way, my setting doesn't affect browsing or torrenting. may affect gaming.

When I used ethernet with the squeezebox I used tcp/optimiser program to analyse and optimise the connection, also disabled nagles algorithm, not very good for streaming music.
