kc613
just put together a music only pc and ran into a problem with a sotm sata filter(ver1.6). when it is connected to my OS ssd sata 3 hard drive, there is no connectivity, so it will not boot. when the drive is connected without the sotm filter, it connects and boots normally. the same sotm sata filter works fine when it is used for the optical drive. any help would be much appreciated. ken Link to comment
kc613
the question is, are there some ssd's that are not compatible with these sotm sata filters, for whatever reason. Link to comment
harry26
hey kc. i have the same problem.on the zuma build with samsung 840 pro ssd or on my other PC with OCZ SSD when i use the SOTM filter the SSD does not get detected by bios. i dont know how chris missed this important point.andrew from SGC told me to use it with a sata 2 port and not with a sata 3 port. i wrote to chris as well but he did not reply. I posted about this in the Zuma thread, but got no response from Chris: "A few days ago I posted about a problem I have with the SATA II filter. As I got no response I asked SotM Korea. I got the following reply: "The following issue has been reported occasionally, and we think it'srelated to the SATA signal line. The old version of SATA filter doesn't have a filter on SATA signal line, but the new SATA filter II(type II rev. 1.6c) has a filter on SATA signal line, and it occurs such a problem with a specific mainboard which supports sata 3.0 and cables. So if you can, please change the SATA cable and try it again, I recommend you to use normal SATA cable which is certified and not handmade. It is strange that I have this problem and others (i.e. Chris, see the photo's) not as I used exactly the same components. However, what strikes me is the fact that in the SATA II filter there is also a filter in the signal line. I wonder if this is desirable. The old SATA filter has no filter in the signal line." I solved the problem by replacing The SATA II filter by the SATA I filter. When you connect the SATA cable to the 3Gb SATA connector it may work. Link to comment
harry26
thanks sebassie.good to know this insight. i also have the new version of the filter which is SATA II filter.i sent a mail to korea and also to simple design but no response. chris also did not respond. since samsung 840 pro can theoritically touch 500 MB/s plus, i wanted to stick to sata 6gbps which is 750MB/sec instead of sata 2 which is 375 MB/Sec. so you are telling me to use a older version of the filter??will that work with sata III 6gbps?? this is a strange problem and i wonder why chris who is so meticulous has not paid attention. other forum members are also not responding or have not posted much. May Park from SoTM Korea said that the new filter does some filtering in the data line, whereas the old filter does not. I wondered in my older post if this 'filtering' is desirable as it might influence the sound. I have the old SATA filter between the ssd and the 6Gb connector now. I tried the new filter also with a Kingston and a Intel SSD, same problem. I think it is not the ssd but the mobo that causes this problem. Finally, SoTM Korea admitted that the problem with the new filter exists, so you should stick to the old filter, if possible. If you mail to SoTM Korea you can swap the new filter for the old filter, as I did :-) Link to comment

kc613
harry26/sebassie i forgot to mention in my first post that i was using a Mini-Box M4-ATX DC-DC power supply run by two gel batteries. with this PS the ssd was not recognized with the sata filter in-line. when i replaced this PS for a pico 160-xt PS the ssd was recognized and functioned properly. who knew? when inquiring about this problem with small green computer and sotm i was basically told that ssd's did not really warrant these filters because no moving parts. again, who knew? i have a sata filter on my optical drive and also have a PCIe usb filter card on this pc. the usb filter improved resolution, but not by a big margin considering the price. eventually i removed the sata filter from the ssd, as there was absolutely no improvement to the sound quality with it installed. sometimes you have to pay to play. lol. the road to higher resolution is paved with snake oil. again, WHO KNEW? harry26
thank kc for the insights.i think sotm sata filter is a bit controversial. some say no need for SSD and use only with HDD. others say use for both SSD and HDD. leave alone the merit of the components aside. but having so much compatibility issues and failing to work out of the box is such a terrible thing and i think this filter does not deserve to be in as a CAPS component. and again if the solution is to only use it with SATA II /3gbps slot then using a samsung 840 pro is a waste as it has more data transfer speed that 3gbps. btw the i use the 192 watt pico psu and the intel DH77EB with i3770t cpu. sandyk
I would suggest that any device that not only provides a cleaner , lower noise and lower impedance power supply to a SATA device, but also helps prevent varying current demands of that device from reflecting back into other components has merit. sandyk
Harry Chris receives a huge volume of mail and may not see all of them, or be able to reply to all. Have you contacted Jesus from Sonore for advice ? Although it is not his problem he is highly approachable and always eager to assist whenever he can. harry26
sandyk.yes i did write to jesus and from his replies it seems he does not have clue on technical issues.i have also contacted "MAY" from sotm in korea.they said they will try to sort it out.lets see. andrew from SGC told that version 2 of sotm mite not work with data III 6 gbps and may work with sata II 3gbps port. from what sebassie said here earlier let us see if it comes to exchanging to the older version of the filter which may work. vortecjr
kc613, I spoke/emailed Andrew A. of SGC and May P. of SOtM regarding your allegations above. Andrew explained that he does not have an opinion of the Sata filters and just installs them per the CAPS specification. May wrote, "Please inform customers that Sata filters are useful with SSD, ODD and HDD drives, I have no idea who was telling the story anyway…" Also, I stand behind the products and use them in my own server. Saying that something is "snake oil" in a public forum because it does not meet "YOUR" approval is inappropriate. zhangduo51
My filter II also has the same problem in my CAS. However, I tried the filter with SSD on my PC for computer games which is powerd by ATX power supply, and it worked normally. So I think the main problem is the power supply... Link to comment
