Article: Computer Audiophile Pocket Server C.A.P.S. v3 Introduction

+1 Makes sense....

It would allow at least clarity on what IS CAPS3 and what IS a derivative (of which there are likely to be many, which is the purpose..)

@Chris... this is a GD cliff-hanger.. !

Looking forward..

Chris has made clear that the idea of the CAPS series is to leverage off-the-shelf components and encourage the widest possible readership to build a computer player that aims to mitigate some of the problems presented by stock computers. The genius of the CAPS recipes is that they have been so successful in popularising the subject, and creating such a strong community of creative developers. They have given people confidence in DIY building. And the internet is better for it.

But to apply for CCL, you have to prove originality: or at least your own, identifiable 'special sauce'. In this regard, I think we're all indebted to CMP whose 2007 recipe blazed the trial - followed two years later by our first DAT1 recipe and, in 2010, the first generation CAPS. Although neither was novel enough to warrant copyright protection, they were at least easier to follow than the rather daunting CMP instructions!

The June 2011 CAPS 2.0 followed on from our second generation DAT1 shortly after the launch of the SOtM card that, at the time, offered a breakthrough in USB performance. Again, we're all indebted to SOtM for that one. Similarly, our third generation T1 recipe contains little that is original and nothing that is proprietary: the breakthrough this time comes courtesy of another card manufacturer and the advent of Atom-bettering processors: thanks to Adnaco and Intel!

We're all fascinated to see what you've been cooking up over there, Chris . . . but as he has said, the real beauty of these things is putting them out there to see how they evolve into something smarter. As TimBL tweeted at the Olympic opening ceremony a few months ago: 'this is for everyone'.

Sorry for the double post :-(

I don't think you need to apologise - I thought you were playing the straight man for Ted...

...in my opinion / experience...

While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing.

And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism.

keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out.

Thanks so much for the kind words guys / gals. The CAPS v3 Topanga design has been published -> Computer Audiophile - Computer Audiophile Pocket Server C.A.P.S. v3 Topanga

chis : can the zuma caps v3 be used as as a pc? other than music all i want is to do google chrome searches and email nothing else. will i beable to transfer what i have stored and saved over last 10yrs from my hp mediacenter windows xp-ie my pictures mainly

i dont understand how much ssd i should order from small green computer would 256gb be toomuch-i will be having my 600+ cds ripped by company in illinois called 'pickled productions' in flac onto archival dvds which i would load on nas or external hdd and rip myown dvd-audios(and hdcds ie the dead) and cd layer on my sacds plus buying from hd recordings.

how does the ssd handle this must i use jriver or can i use foobar or mediamonkey

i will use usb dac the schiit modi for now then schiit gungnir out to my avr

what are those colored outputs on the back panel is one a digital out? is the blue multipin for a printer or can wireless printer, mouse, keyboard be used?

what is the purpose of the hdmi output is it for videos or audio portion of videos and will i beable to use a bluray/dvd/burner

is this going to be too complicated for 65yo who just wants "pure, perfect musical sound"?

i currently just listen to MOG via schiit modi/magni, it sounds great better than 320kbps and the few discs i had ripped and werenot lost when my backup failed sound phenonmenal in either 44.1 or 96 with the dac including the dvdaudio stuff ie sinatra at the sands bella flec played through foobar

so should i just buy say an hp pc with ssd/i7 processor/16gbs ram/blurayplayer/burner all in one and be happy

i so much dont want another tower pc made for the masses/the mac mini prob is tooexpensive/but i want "small" and esthetically pleasing piece(s) of equipement to go my schiit dac/hp amp and bitperfect sound

thanks bobbmd

Hi Chris,

Do you think that your CAPS could fit in a CD3t from Bel Canto?

Do you think that BC would agree selling an empty CD3t case to put a CAPS in it and get a fancy CAPS?

Regards

Bel Canto CD2 > Bel Canto DAC 1.5 > Bel Canto Ref500s > ATC SCM 20 SL

Windows 7 > JRiver MC 17
