When they do, it is often a special thing where a great song can become two great songs ... a cover needs to do two things. First, it needs to remain true to the original song and pay homage to it. This is not to say that it must sound like a copy of the original. Rather it must maintain some aspect of the original. This could be the emotion, intent, originality…… Second, the cover needs to have the cover bands own signature placed upon it. Don't get me wrong ... I'm a huge Chuck Berry fan ... and I know the homage Keith pays ... the OP alludes to "gap" between the "personality" of the original and the personality of the cover ... and whether the cover can or should be an "improvement" ... well I post this one in the spirit of appreciating that gap in favour of the Rolling Stones ... Popular Post Iving
I heard my buddy's version of "Hey There Delilah" before I heard The Plain White T's. Johnny used to perform whopping, passionate versions of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on the streets (he was founder of the campaign "Keep Streets Live!" - i.e. protecting busking - in the UK). His spontaneous rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime" with a homeless guy in Leeds is worth a watch. Please understand I'm not promoting him - he died a few weeks before my son early 2018. Posted here purely for music's sake. sphinxsix and christopher3393 2 Link to comment
