sphinxsix
Hendrix 'All Along the Watchtower' wins in my private ranking but there are so many other great covers. This one started my interest in Jacqui Naylor A great song and a great album by 70+ mento musicians This is Beatallica, a cover band covering Beatles' in Metallica style Link to comment
sphinxsix
The original song is so good that it's hard to find a good cover version. These two are IMO among the most interesting ones. Link to comment

I think it still remains true to the spirit of the song: It's from Martin Scorcese's "Lightning in a Bottle" which IMO is absolutely worth seeing. Just asking. This is not the worst pop song ever. I almost like it I'd probably choose the last version, not only because this was the first one I heard long ago. As far as I remember there was lots of smoke around if someone would ask Link to comment

My choices for the 'mindless escapes' are a little different. Right now yodeling rules this 'sub-genre' of course . But I also have e.g. a small selection of pop music I liked when I was a kid. Some of it is really kitschy! Some not that much. 31 minutes ago, The Computer Audiophile said: Pop is all about making money and being who you think your audience wants you to be. Right now this is what sells. You're probably right but if sad guys and females sounding like idiots sell nowadays (I guess they do) I'm even more worried about the future. 32 minutes ago, The Computer Audiophile said: I much prefer music with a message sung by musicians who aren’t afraid to speak truth to power. This is “doing it for the right reasons” in my book. Other people’s books are different of course. That's rock's (and not only) driving force of course! In my subjective opinion we have so little interesting rock music nowadays because the youth (generalizing of course) stopped rebelling against power and authority. If I was to say what's been 'idee fixe' of my music journey I'd probably express it in a phrase 'hearing things I haven't heard yet'. But I respect all the stages of this journey, the 'mindless escapes' stuff included. I also try to respect others taste even if it's very different from mine. After all just like there are no two identical people, there are also no two people with identical music taste. I think some have big problems with understanding this very simple truth.
