HQPlayer's Network Audio Adapter

Recommended Posts

Jussi,

I have been trying to get NAA 401 to work directly on my uRendu. I downloaded the image and loaded it to a micro SD but it does not boot. The NAA does not show up in the settings page of HQP 431 (on Win 10 machine with Roon). The ip does show up as active in an ip scan as it is manually bound to the MAC address on the router but when I enter the ip to Chrome it times out. Also, the red light stays on on the Rendu but the RJ45 lights are normal. This card was from an older version of SonicOrbiter. It is an 8 G card. It had some partitions. I formatted the card and put the NAA on the largest partition. Do I need to remove the partitions and what is the correct formatting protocol to use? Am I doing something else wrong? Help much appreciated.  Thanks

There is nothing on the OS that would answer to Chrome. It only has the NAA software module and nothing else besides the OS itself. So only way to access it is through HQPlayer.

OK, this is likely the problem. The image is full storage image with partitions and everything, so it must be written to the raw card for example with Etcher or similar tool. It doesn't matter if the card is formatted or not, the image will overwrite the contents.

If the image is written to a partition, it won't work because the needed boot information is outside of the partitions in a special area.

Thanks, I downloaded Etcher. When I try to select the NAA image the field under both the Download and HQP storage bin I have is blank. Is the file format accepted by Etcher? It doesn't show 7Z files on the front page list.

Jussi, I did get the file unzipped and loaded to the card. Now I am having problems getting it working:

- when I turn the uRendu on it does boot but the red system light never goes off

-I can select Holo Audio Gen 2 USB from the Network Adapter ipv6/output menu with network control on

-when I play music (PCM or SDM) I get stuttering playback no matter what buffer setting I use.

At this point, I have tried everything I can think of. What am I doing wrong? For the time being I am going to put the sonicOrbiter card back in. I will try again when I get your input.

Thanks

I re-flashed the card again and tried ipv4 and ipv6 but I am still getting the same problem of start/stop audio. I see someone above got 401 to work on an opticalRendu but I am not having any luck with my ultraRendu. This is not a big deal as sonicOrbiter supports 4.0 perfectly and I am sure they will update to 4.0.1 soon. For now I have switched back to the SO card. It was just an experiment to see if there was any discernible difference.

Jussi, Below is a copy of a post I put in the Rendu support area of Sonore. This is really strange. It seems that the NAA can no longer recognize my Holo Spring 2 DAC. I just will not connect. I have Roon and HQP on a Win 10/64 machine and this configuration has worked successfully for a very long time. To have it stop from one track to the next is really strange. I get two messages when I open HQP now. The first is the "cannot open device" message and then the "not found" message after that. As you can see, I have tried everything I could think of. As I mention below the Rendu still sees the DAC and plays to the DAC as a Roon Ready device just fine. When I look in HQP settings, the DAC is not ther in IPv4 or IPv6. It used to be there in both.

I am at the end of my ability to resolve this. Your help would be greatly appreciated. If you need to get into my machine just let me know and I will get Team Viewer.

JR, Andrew, Barrows,

I need your help.

I have a very strange problem. My uRendu running 2.8 suddenly does not work in NAA mode. It stopped working at the end of a track. When the next track did not play I checked HQP and the dreaded " NAA not found" message was showing. There was nothing different in my system from one track to the next.

I checked and the DAC (Spring 2) is showing in DAC Diagnostics and when I switched to Roon Ready it plays fine. When I switched back to NAA mode it still is not being seen by HQPlayer.

I have a spare 2.8 SD card which I tried without any luck. I have re-booted everything (PC, Router, Switch, HDPlex PS and uRendu) several times and still no luck. I also reverted to HQP 4.4 and then re-loaded 4.5 without success.

I checked the "allow network control" setting in HQP and that is turned on.

I tried another USB cable and that did not help.

Is there some physical piece of hardware inside the uRendu that could have failed?

I am stumped. All help appreciated.

Windows installs updates automatically in the background without asking you. That is one suspect. But please check Control Panel -> Network -> Adapter settings, that there are no more than one network interface active. For the other interfaces, select the interface and click Disable from the toolbar.

Most typical reason for NAA to not appear is that multicast packets are getting routed to wrong interface.

Thanks but no luck. Still getting the two messages; "can't open" and "not found".

I checked and all adapters are disabled including wifi (which I don't use on this machine. I do have VPN software on this machine but that is off as well and the adapters are disabled.

I checked "Media Streaming" and the uRendu is there checked as allowed and active which makes sense as Roon can stream to it.

Is there a dependent service that Windows may have turned off. If so let me know and I will check.

Any other ideas?

There is always the nuclear option to just re-load Windows but I hate to do that as it is a lot of work to restore.

Will wait to hear from you.

Thanks

I did have a spare SD card. I copied your image for the Rendu to it and tried it but it does not work. I tried this before this problem and the NAA did not show up using it so I went back to sonicOrbiter 2.8 and it worked well until this. The red light on the Rendu never went out so it probably was not fully booting up. I re-burned 4.1.1 for Rendu to it and I tried it again today with the same result.

I have enabled HQP log file. What is the URL for that again.

I checked and the network is Private.

I tried disabling the firewall but still the same result.

Let me find the log and I will post it.

We can continue this tomorrow. It is very late on your end.

On a WAG, I decided to move the Cat5e cable from the switch it was on directly to the router as a test. Well, it started working again! So I then moved the cable to a different port on the switch and it continues to work. Strange that the port was only interfering with the NAA function and not the Roon endpoint function. So I am leaving it on the new port and standing in amazement of the BS this hobby is capable of throwing at us. It had been on that port for over a year and there was no difference in configuration of the ports. Flow Control was turned on for both ports. The only difference is that the previous port is a 10Gbe capable port. Maybe it was a clock issue but it only affected the NAA function.

Hi, I’m running NAA on Debian (dierptpi) on a 4 GB Pi 4 and when playing DSD256, I get an occasional pops.  After some googling, it’s suggested increasing the buffer size might help.  I’ve increased to 250ms in HQPlayer (running on a Windows machine), but the pops still show up every once a while.  Is there a way to increase the buffer size in NAA?  Or something else I can do to get rid of the pops?  I’m running XTR filter and ASDM7EC modulator on an i7 7700k machine over clocked to 4.8 GHz with a RTX 2080 Super.  Thank you.

Try decreasing the buffer as well.

Yes you can, although currently limitation is that you can access only of the DACs at a time. If each is behind it's own NAA, you can access all simultaneously. But that would mean you would have as many HQPlayer instances too.

This is what I do. I kept my Win 10 license for PCM to my bedroom system when I got an M1 Mini which I use for DSD to my main system. Roon feeds both from the Win 10 machine. I can use both at the same time but rarely do.

Posted this on the Roon Forum as well:

I decided to try to isolate my music on my network and ran into a problem. Here’s how I had everything working:

HQPlayer Desktop 4.10 connected to oR NAA:

Roon Core and HQplayer both loaded on Mac Mini M1, selected “local host” under “Add HQPlayer” in Roon Core settings:
IP Address of Mac Mini was 192.168.0.171
IP Address of OpticalRendu was 192.168.0.58

I created a new VLAN with only these two devices on it
Roon Core and HQplayer on Mac Mini M1
IP Address of Mac Mini 192.168.30.171
IP Address of OpticalRendu 192.168.30.58

Everything looked good, I could see both the oR and M1 on the network. HQplayer Desktop saw the oR, clicked the little icon in HQplayer to engage it. (Tried unclicking network control and re-clicking it multiple times as well)

When I tried to play a song in Roon, it says it cannot find HQplayer. I rebooted the router 5 times, disconnected  and reconnected the oR multiple times as well. Still, I could not get Roon to see HQPlayer.

I since restored my Network backup settings and everything works as it did. What step did I miss here? Did I need to click "add HQPlayer" again on the Roon Core and select “local Host” again? Did Roon retain the ip address of 192.168.0.171 even though it was changed to 192.168.30.171? I could remote connect in to 192.168.30.171 so it was indeed valid as was the IP Address of OpticalRendu of 192.168.30.58. I restarted HQplayer NAA on the Rendu several times as well. Stumped, any ideas?

Is Roon looking for HQP as "local host" or via an ip address. Check to make sure that if it is looking for HQP with an ip that the ip created in your VLAN setup for the MMM1 is what is entered in Roon. Better yet, use local host. BTW, Roon will be updated tomorrow to use HQP v4 API (Roon is still using HQP v3 API) and all of this will change and you will need HQP 4.16.2 or later (just use 4.17.1) to get Roon to talk to HQP. HQP 4.10 will no longer work with Roon at all. There should be no need for a VLAN unless your network is really saturated with devices and even then a good router should be able to handle it.

Typo on my part....I had already upgraded to 4.17.

Roon was looking for local host in the working setup and also in the

second setup that did not function.

My network isn't overly saturated, 25 devices on it. Decided to put all my IoT devices on a separate VLAN. MAybe need to leave well enough alone. It's always a panic when the music won't play after messing with it for hours at end. Finally was smart and backed up my settings this time around!

Segregating the IoT devices on a VLAN is the better way. That way if any of them have security vulnerabilities they shouldn’t be able to compromise your main computers and other devices. It also reduces the chatter on the network. Good call.

At least you should be using 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps ethernet instead of 100 Mbps. You are trying to push 93.75 Mbps through 100 Mbps connection which is not going to be reliable.

Add in the extra transmission addressing data and tags needed in every frame and you will frequently be trying to push in excess of 100 Mbps.
