JRiver tips and techniques: user experiences repository

You can use the same library for iTunes and JRiver. I do. But, you must do your edits in iTunes. When you add new files, first add them in iTunes. JRiver will automatically import what it sees on your hard drive. If you edit files in JRiver, iTunes will not be able to find them.

So the rule is to 1st add or edit in iTunes, then let JRiver import the files when you run MC19.

That is good to know the way I am doing it is okay. Thanks

A slight variation - not impugning the advise given by Mercman - lots of different ways to do it.

I have both Audirvana and MC18/19 (just moved fully to MC19). I store all my music files on my NAS. I don't let iTunes organize my library (personal taste). I use XLD to rip my CDs. I do most of my tagging in XLD (including updates to cover art and embed them within the files). XLD automatically places them in the correct music folder on my NAS. I store my DSD and high resolution files in separate folders on the NAS (thus one folder for DSD, one for high resolution and one for CDs). I don't really need to organize it that way for MC as no special import process of FLAC and DSD files is required for MC, unlike Audirvana integrated with iTunes).

Anyway, then I do import the new albums into iTunes and/or Audirvana (if FLAC or DSD) and use auto import with MC. The process is a lot easier with MC because it just watches the folders I designate for new files.

I have used MC for many, many months now so I am very very used to it, and to be honest I find the music management capabilities and the capability to locate albums and tunes much easier with MC and JRemote at this point in time, YMMV.

I use XLD also. I really need to familiarize myself more with JRiver but for some reason I have found its setup and use beyond the basics confusing or hard to grasp for me. Maybe because it's more of a Windows program adapted for Mac and I struggle with pretty much anything Windows.

It is very very different from using many Mac programs and especially from iTunes. The basics of importing a library and playing tunes was easy, but to your point learning many of the finer points, such as building custom views and tagging within MC does take time, and a lot of searching of the WIKI and other sources to become comfortable. In the end, it was worth it for me. Also this forum and the Interact forum is a great resource for assistance.

Hi guys,

How do you get JRiver to both rip and display compilation albums as a single entity, rather than as a bunch of shards indexed by the individual artists? I'm sure his has been asked and answered before, so I apologize for my ignorance.

Thanks.

Make sure the album-artist field is set to multiple artists while each artists might be listed as a separate artist. Here is the Blue Coast ESE Collection Vol 1 (DSF) example.

Hi Ted,

Right-click a file and Choose Locate>On Disk External.

Most likely they are in a separate folders, but more likely is that the Album Artist field is reading (Multiple Artists) because at least one Artist field says something like BB King & JJ Cale.

Add the Album Artist field and I'll bet that's what it shows.

The Artist field is great for preserving the "duets", but also various incarnations or misspelling that often occur on records.

I'll write a post about how I use a Custom Artist field to collate certain performers out of the Multiple Artists tile and in a cleaner Artist view (as you all know a default Artist tile scheme will look CRAZY).

JRMC Libraries

When JRMC is first setup it will by default, create a Library called Main Library. It will put this library in a place of it's choosing that may not be where the user might prefer.

This is the default behavior to auto import everything into one large Library ... but we can do better than this.

The Library file is a database of information fields pertaining to the collection of music that the user has, regardless of where that music might be located.

The Library file has nothing to do with your collection of music other than to collect and store file information and to direct the player to play a file from a certain location.

The users collection of music files can be located anywhere that provides persistent availability. It is better that the user understands where the music files are located choosing to build a collection that the user controls. Letting applications utilize default locations may be easier, but will lead to confusion about where everything actually is.

In JRMC using the Library Manager one can do many chores associated with maintaining the various Libraries a user may wish to have. I keep 6 different Libraries current on my music player PC. We can also assert that we want our Libraries located in a particular place, I use a folder in the root of the music files drive called JRMC_LIBRARY. In that folder I make more folders, one for each of the Libraries that I wish to use.

When establishing a Library, in JRMC select Library/Library Manager/Add Library ... give it a nice name, like LOCAL_CLASSICAL or something that you like. Then browse to the folder that you previously created that will have the same name as the Library being made and select it, then say OK. Now again select Library then Import and browse to the folders where the music for this library is located. JRMC will find all the files under say \CLASSICAL in your music files folder and import them into your LOCAL_CLASSICAL Library.

Some forethought in arranging and naming the folder structure for your music files will aid in this process.

You can make as many Libraries as you like be they based on Artists, or Music Types or whatever seems appropriate.

As a PC user I use dbPowerAmp and find it to be excellent at ripping, editing and converting files. Tag editing can be done on groups, I choose to remove all the extra tagging information that I don't want. I keep it simple and this has helped me get all my files displaying correctly in JRMC. Control over the default ripping/tagging of files helps.

After several Libraries exist, it is easy to switch from Library to Library quickly electing a genre change, or whatever.

When I need to edit a group of files from a new ripped disk, I do all the editing and when I am finished and the files are where they will live, I load JRMC and the Library where these tunes will be accessed from. Then I simply import those new files (information) into the Library and that's about it.

If need be, a Library can be loaded, then cleared of information, then reloaded(imported) to form a newer Library list. This is useful if a number of disks are added at the same time.

If you are trying JRMC19 but already have JRMC18 Libraries, version 19 can use those libraries also. Setup as mentioned above then point at your Library folders and 19 will simply look like they do in 18.

There are numerous other Library management tools, but these are the ones needed to get setup.

Thorough post, and they can be useful. But I personally find multiple Libraries are cumbersome imo.

JRMC19 now has Users feature which is much more efficient.

I have an Admin user, Audio user, and Kids.

You simply enter tags in User field. Then you can add to Upper Toolbar, User option, for quick switching.

With almost 500K files (Audio,Video, Images) I find cutting out all Images and Video makes JRMC a little snappier when user Audio User.

Compared to Multiple Libraries

It has always been possible to maintain separate libraries for different users or purposes.

However, this has several significant drawbacks:

* There are multiple copies of the metadata and keeping each library in sync is challenging

* A tool like television recording needs to know about _all_ recordings for all users to properly handle conflicts and record everything (you can't not record a kid's show because you happen to be watching a parent's show)

* Multiple libraries complicates backup and restore since there's no single set of data

* A library server will only serve a single library

Not sure why you are telling me this. My post was a solution to a compilation question directly above my post, not a problem I needed solving. ??

Neat little thing you can do...

If you are running JRemote with JRMC and you have a bluetooth enabled stereo system in your vehicle, you can play your entire library, streamed at CD quality, to your vehicle system.

Open port 52199 from the internet to your server. You do this in your firewall, and with some firewalls you can limit the access, always a good idea.

Setup a new "server" in JRemote, pointing to the outside address of your firewall. This is the address visible to your firewall.

Connect to your JRMC server

Set the output zone to "this device" and connect the device to your vehicle's stereo system.

Play away, anywhere, anytime, with CD quality and your full library available to you!

-Paul

*Caveat- you may incur network costs if you are not on an unlimited service plan.

*Caveat two - someone may try to access your server. In over six months of doing this, I have not seen anyone able to to break through and do any damage, but that is with my firewall. I think it is safe but YMMV!

Totally my fault, I visually blended the two posts and meant to quote the OP.

I think you can turn on Authentication for Library Server.

Library Server has always amazed me. You can actually burn a CD over WAN. At least you used to be able to in MC17.

File - Library -Import gives you three choices:

Import a single folder (could be a large parent folder of albums underneath it)

Configure auto-import (this is what most of us use, and allows you to select the directories/folders that JRiver will then continue to monitor/synchronize for any changes)

Run auto-import (runs last settings)

In addition to the JRMC Import tool...

In Tools>Options>General - Enable Shell Integration and in Windows Explorer you can right-click files/folders to "manually" import:

I am in the process of moving from a Logitech Music Server setup to jriver. One of the options available on LMS is to view my music by music folder. I have all my live music stored this way with similarly named folders. When I view them on my SB Touch they show up as one row for each folder. Is there a way to do this in jriver? My plan is to have 1 view for commercially available music (downloads and ripped CDs) and another for live music. I want to keep the folder view if possible since the individual files are not tagged.

The view called files will show location and file type, but you can show anything (like folder name next to location). Clicking on location (say "D drive") will explode out to your two major folders. Or show us what you mean by means of a screen capture from LMS. I can probably mimic it. Any view can be saved and shown in JRemote, too (as stated above).

Last night, from the urging of several forum members here and on Audio Circle, I did a 26 minute screencast video on JRiver for Beginners. It's here:

JRiver Beginner - Ted_B's library

For those of you well versed it will not be enlightening, but for beginners I go over:

Converting trials and registration

Auto-importing your music files

Tagging techniques, including Tag Pasting

How to create custom views, and then import them to JRemote (and where you link JRemote)

Setting up audio drivers and a few audio functions

Where to set up down/upsampling and on-the-fly conversion

How to do offline PCM-to-DSD conversions

Be nice, it's my first. :) Let me know what I missed. I forgot to show this pic, a sample of custom views showing up in JRemote.

Edit: I am learning (that nothing is free). Screencast.com (the software's own hosting site) said 2 GB of files were free, and I never noticed that it now says 2Gb of "bandwidth" is free too. I am going to belly up for a month's worth of extra bandwidth (I reached my 2GB already cuz a 300mb file only gets to be dl'd 7 times!!!) and then re-host a much smaller file (I was unaware of the details..this file, when brought to full size, is too huge anyway).

The video should be back up in an hour or so. I will edit here when it is......Argh! :)

I have a view question/issue.

I have imported all my music in my library. I want to set up a view which only contains music from one of the folders. So, I added a rule which says that filename (name) contains \\MUSICSERVER\All_Music\Others\. However, nothing shows up. I know this path is correct since when I look at one of the folders in another view this path shows up in the properties. What am I doing wrong?
