PreAmp recommendation

Based on my primitive review, I have chosen the Keces DA 151 DAC to feed my AudioEngine A5's (currently, but may have other plans for these and move to un-powered or better powered speaker for office setup)

 

My question is knowing I need volume control that leaves me with Windows software (FooBar or JR River Media Center are two under evaluation) or speaker's knob! I would like to put a preamp in line and see lots of great ones but mostly focused on providing great headphone amps. My ears do not like headphones so of little use but add to the cost.

 

Looking for recommendations on economical great preamps primarily for volume control. Obviously if I go with un-powered speakers I will get into the integrated amp or separates discussion where separates again have always won, at least for me.
