A combination of the two would be great.

It seems to me a choice between a video and written review is unnecessarily restrictive. Each medium could be viewed as having its strengths and weaknesses, and a review could be constructed in a way that the two media are used in a complimentary fashion.

By the way, Chris, I like the form-factor of the mysterious 1 TB USB drive. I want one.? What is it?

It’s a cool USB 3.0 MSATA external enclosure. I’d get an M.2 external enclosure if I replaced this one.

the thing about videos.. the content isn't searchable. So if word of mouth is the only legacy you want...

text with photos - even animations or short clips

you could see the back of the Naim in a photo

I am not opposed to motion pictures - as an undergrad. I almost went into being a film maker - but certain modes of presentation are best for certain topics

Hi Guys - Just got this “wonderful” email and thought I’d post it in the comments here.

    Tough crowd :~)

I think you are making a mistake using video reviews. There is no way I'm going to sit and listen to a guy ramble and stumble and pause to gather his thoughts for 16 minutes when I could have read the same content in probably 5. Maybe the younger generation is too lazy to read but not me.

Thanks for the kind words and feedback. I think you’re totally right about using the video medium to the maximum and showing things that can’t be depicted well with written words.

    Your feedback helps immensely.

Video is preferable when it gives you something the written word and a photo can't do.

But I'm also in the camp that thinks video reviews are too time consuming to watch - I'd rather read.

Maybe a better idea would be to do a written review for the overall review and use the video in smaller bits that specifically need video in order to show some aspect or detail of the device being reviewed.

I like video but it need to be 8-10 minutes and convey information constantly ... anything more in length and I wander around in my head.  Perhaps the word "Awesome" could be a drinking game?

    Written reviews...totally.

Naim has been making lowish powered, wonderful sounding integrated amps since the early eighties.  No surprise that their latest is superb.

    Hi Chris

Are you able to post a transcript of your video review please?

    Thanks

I like the video review, other than, IMO, the over use of "totally" which I don't think you use in your written reviews.

I believe it is very innovative the review using videos, I do prefer the written as well

I think we may just be lazy, the video you have to watch start to end at the video speed but the reading you can adjust it, are we being lazy here guys (and gals)?

Chris, thanks. I enjoyed your review, honestly... I normally like video reviews, but I think this presentation too wordy and slow paced. Perhaps you could use video to compliment an article with a "this is what it is, these are the specs, this is the front, this is the back, and this is what I think of it" type synopsis for those in a hurry, lol.

Here's a purely selfish perspective: At work, I can't watch a video while sitting through  a conference call waiting for my five minutes to speak :^)

    Chris,

I just re-watched your review and I am glad you did the video review it helped me understand even more your feelings on the Unity Atom. I ordered one last week from one of the vendors on Superphonica!    In my house it has been very very hard to get other family members to play music on the main system.  There is too much complexity there.  Roon and a separate volume control just kills it.  Also from the Darko review streaming from Soundcloud will be great using google cast.

I purchased this for my second system to drive a pair of Neat Acoustics iota alphas!  But I am going to break it in upstairs on a pair of B&W 804 Nautilus speakers.  We will see.  IF the Atom is not strong enough then I bet the Nova will be and maybe the YGGY/Ayre will just go away.  Maybe the 804s will go and something else will be in the Living Room, maybe Aerial 6t or 5t??  Or the new iota Explorer!

I have been using Roon for two years and I am at my pain/breakover point where I would write them the check for lifetime.  It looks like the Naim app may fulfill the need.

As I listen to my system more I have been finding that the lossy streams from some of the music services is really great. Kudos to the YGGY!.

This system might be a reason to get a Google home mini or something to see if you can cast music from there?  or will the Echo???

In talking with dealer I purchased the uint from he said to just use the NAIM power cord.  Well that will be interesting

    Thanks again for the review.

Long time headphone person just switched to speakers. The Atom with KEF LS50 is an amazing pair. Totally happy to just have one box and completely free up my desk. I may upgrade to Focal Sopra N1 later this year. Not sure if it's going to be a monumental upgrade from the LS50.
