Roon From Roon Labs - A Video Run-through

    Roon-Thumb.png

The hottest thing to hit HiFi in recent memory is here. It's a software application / service called Roon from Roon Labs. Roon is unlike anything currently available for OS X and Windows in that it enables users to browse their music collections effortlessly and in an incredibly engaging manner. Rather than post screenshots I created a video showing the rich experience that Roon enables. A more thorough article with detailed tips, tricks, and information is soon to follow. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

Roon Labs is comprised of the original team that created Sooloos. When Sooloos first hit the market nearly ten years ago it was like nothing digital audiophiles had ever seen. Sooloos was acquired by Meridian Audio in 2008. After six years the original Sooloos team has spun off, leaving the Sooloos product intact with Meridian, into its own software company, Roon Labs. It's hard to believe from the original Sooloos to the Meridian / Sooloos to Roon Labs, this team has managed to create a product that remains unequaled in my view. Competitors have tried to imitate what this team has done for ten years but nobody has succeeded.

In addition to Roon software, Roon Labs will integrate its product with third party hardware manufacturers. Launch partners include Auralic, dCS, Linn, Meridian, and PS Audio. I know there are many more companies lined up to work with Roon. I can't wait to see what comes of these integrations.

Roon will be available online beginning May 11, 2015 with pricing for the service set at $119 annually, $499 for a lifetime subscription, and $999 for an upcoming Pro lifetime subscription for Home Automation. There is a 14 day free trial. Visit http://roonlabs.com for more information.

Our community site is very active, and I highly encourage visiting. People are usually more vocal when things go don't go perfect than when things go right, but we have about 600 users already (at 1 week post-launch) and most are beyond happy with the results.

But I am still having problems getting my Macbook to work as a remote again, having set it up to work fine on the first day, ( apart from the TIDAL dropouts ) but having it stop working as a remote on the second day, not having changed anything. I have had email responses from three different Roon employees so far but no way to coordinate or even respond to those consistently...so I post here and on the forum and contact support but get nowhere so far. The time clock on the free trial is ticking away and my patience with the forum model for customer support is wearing thin. If you have 600 users and most of them are beyond happy, there cant be that many people who arent. I dont want to be a grump but when I peruse the forum I find the same issue popping up but can't find a resolution to it. I can't guess at this point whether it is pilot error, UI problems or a bug but the lack of a consistent follow through is very frustrating

What happens when you try to use your MacBook as the remote?

@Diw - I am not with Roon - but try this.

On the Mac Mini that you wish to be your Roon Core - I assume all is well and it is pointing to the correct music libraries and everything works correctly?

Open Settings on the Mac Mini - go to Setup and ensure that Accept connections from remotes is set to "YES"

If yes then go to the following:

    1. On your Macbook, delete the Roon application.

    2. Then delete the following two folders on the Macbook:

    a. /Users/USERNAME/Library/Roon

    b. /Users/USERNAME/Music/Roon

    3. Reboot the Macbook

    4. Verify you can connect to the Mac Mini from the Macbook ( i.e. screenshare or folder share)

    5. Download and install Roon on the Macbook again.

    6. Launch Room - choose the option to use a remote library ( on this part I am flying blind - but I think that is the choice ). Choose the Mac Mini.

At this point, you should be flying, knock on wood.

Just an update. I installed "core" Roon on my heavy duty desktop PC and switched my MacbookPro 13" with HUGO as a remote "private" zone and it works great. Much better sound as well. Clearly my very early problems regarding SQ on the Mac was using a machine for both core and player that was not capable. No dropouts, stutters or stops on high res either. It is getting there and this is going to be FANTASTIC when all the pieces are in place. Tonight I get where this is all headed and LOVE IT!

Hi DIW - Or you can try this:

Open the Settings page on your remote computer and select General tab. If possible click Disconnect. This will bring you to the main screen for selecting what you want to do (either use a local library or connect to a core computer). See the screen shots below.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions...the Roon lads really came through and found the problem was with the Firewall settings on the Mac Mini, turning the firewall off , de-installing Roon on the Remote and re-installing it got it all working fine...I think the problem was with the firewall bouncing incoming connections from " mono sgen" so just accept those in incoming connections. I suspect there will be a better work around on the way. I ended up very impressed with their support and am now enjoying the product the way it should be used...thanks Mike, Kevin and bplexico

Hello DIW - glad it is working now. I suspect for anyone using a Mac with the Firewall turned on, one will need to set it to allow connections from Roon ( "mono sgen" ). This is true for a lot of the software I use, such as Copy, Dropbox, Linn Kinsky/Kazoo, JRIVER, etc..unless of course they go down a different path.

Of course I don't mean to speak on their behalf. And glad you now have a chance to relax and try out the software!

When will you include links for Tidal new albums on genres like jazz and country?

    @PeterC -

What error message to you get when launching your Macbook as a remote?

And what machine has the Roon Core, and is that system working if you log directly onto it?

I think the @peterC post is an old one of mine, inexplicably delayed and wrongly titled...as I said above, the issue appears to be resolved now and I am very much enjoying using Roon...occasionally it runs very slowly but not often enough to identify a problem...I am going ahead with the annual sub anyway !!

I am going to sign up for a life time subscription. I have listened to about 450 tracks since last Wednesday, many on Tidal. I had many dropouts using the Tidal Chrome Browser and many of the tracks were unlistenable as the sound quality was poor. I have no dropouts using the Roon software. For anyone subscribing to Tidal for CD quality sound, Roon software is a must, especially because you can add tracks or albums to your own collection. Also JRiver will not be integrated with Tidal. I would say the sound quality is about the same as JRiver, I don't hear any difference.

The artwork of the artists' pictures is excellent. I am using my Dell 23 inch touchscreen monitor about 10 feet from the computer with the keyboard and mouse connected to the Dell so I will not need any remote capabilities. I never realized how much music I have. It also highlights that I have a lot of duplicate files.

Wonderful news. I hope to be seeing many other reports like this. Constant drop-outs and stoppage were the reason I didn't sign up for TIDAL.

I can confirm that on my system using Roon and Tidal that I have experienced no drop outs. Located on Left Coast.

If they aren't found, we can help you find them. If they don't exist at all in our metadata database, you can revert to tags.

The key feature CA members want, that we are missing, is the ability to use our enhanced data as layer under your own tags, instead of the other way around. We hope to have that in the next few weeks.

Exactly, I am one of them, too ;) Or at least I want to have the possibility to choose. Also it would be great if the metadata could be edited, but I think you're working already on that, right?

Also as I have an ASIO only driver for my Chord DAC it will only get of interest to me if ASIO is implemented, but you re-prioritized this as I saw. That's good news...

Seems pretty cool. Roon doesn't seem to recognize my Aries though. Shouldn't it show up under 'networked devices' like 'airport express" does? Also, how do you change the screen format? Thanks!

You won't see your Aries until the integration work with Roon is complete.

Nobody, outside of Meridian, has the integration work done.

Can someone tell me if you have to create a new profile for the Roon Forum as I don't seem to be able to log in with my Roon profile.

Also how do you create a playlist in Roon?

    Thanks
