Roon 1.3 Major Update Coming Today

This just in. Much more to come.

"We're very excited to announce that Roon 1.3 is going live today! This is our most ambitious release ever – in the works for nearly nine months – but we think it's been worth the wait. With new streaming hardware support, audio processing, DSP, file handling, metadata management, and social sharing, there are new features and improvements in almost every area of the product.

We've incorporated hundreds of suggestions from you, and thrown in a few of our own:

"With the 1.3 update, Roon now streams to Sonos devices! This means all the users in a home – with one app and one music collection – can play music to Sonos, Airplay, Squeezebox, Sooloos, and any of over 50 Roon Ready devices available today.

We've added a whole family of audio and DSP features with a 64-bit audio pipeline, including dynamic range analysis, EQ, upsampling, crossfeed for headphones, and adjustments for headroom as well as corrections for speaker phase and delay.

Roon learns about you as you use it. You create playlists, tags, and groom your collection to be presented just the way you want. Now all of that can be automatically backed up, both locally and to Dropbox. Backups are incremental and configurable, so you can save as much history as you like. Roon users have been talking about their favorite music on our community site, on social networks, and even by texting screenshots from their phones. With 1.3, you can create shareable images about artists, albums, and songs, including all of Roon's metadata and your own comments. Images can be posted directly to Facebook, Twitter, and Imgur, or saved to your device. Starting with a new lightning-fast search, we've improved performance across the board. Audio and database operations are faster, and communication between Core and Remotes is more responsive."

    I

Is It true that It can take days to index all of my music? JRiver tells me I have 95822 files (or about 5TB worth of music). What should I expect?

There are two different processes as I see it: scan and then analysis.

Scan adds to your library. It moves fairly quickly so you can start enjoying music right away.

Analysis takes some time but I think it only matters if you want to apply volume normalization and see the dynamics measurement they come up with.

JRiver has a similar feature where during import you can elect to have JRiver do detailed analysis.

I'm just speculating here, but I do recall that during the several days it took to analyze my library, I was never once impeded in my ability to listen to music.

It took 5 hours to scan and add almost all files (153 files are maybe missing; 95822 files on JRiver vs 95669 on Roon) and it is still at 8155 files analysis after 5 hours...

I did switch to 4 cores so maybe it did help.

I guess I was wrong after all about it taking days but I'm pretty sure I read that a few times in the past and thought It was a bit odd.

I like it so far, lots of great options and stuff to look at but it is quite different from JRemote... Quite a few more clics than JRemote to get to the music... Then again, I am an old fart and been using JRemote since day 1 so old farts usually don't like change that much!

Thanks to all for the help!

I have just over 100k tracks, directly attached via Firewire to 2011 Mac Mini (2.5Ghz i5, 8GB RAM). Initial scan (i.e., adding / verifying files) took minutes (far less than 30 minutes), but the DR scan, etc., took the better part of a week, running on 3 cores most of the time (if I switched to 4 cores, it started interrupting playback).

I had all 8 cores running on my massive workstation I built and it ripped through them all in the day all while playing music. Computer HP still wins!

Not knowing about the 1.3 upgrade, I loaded a trial version of Roon just after 1.3 was released. The impetus for doing so was that I realized that unlike JRemote, I could use a Windows tablet as a remote. I no longer have to switch between an old iPad and a Surface Pro 3 to play music, compose emails and surf the web – yippee!! iPad's are a PITA to compose emails on and my long-in-the-tooth iPad 2 is struggling in the surfing department.

Not believing that I would necessarily like the Roon experience especially given its cost, I’ve found otherwise!! So far, compared to JRiver which I have used for years and Apple related music server software, I’ve found the Roon experience to be a wonderful one! It’s as good as if not better than the fact that with a very slight learning curve, Roon just works and it easily does so with all my devices. In fact, I like Roon so much, as soon as I decided that I was going to purchase it, I ordered a new 2017 15.6-inch Spectre x360 convertible notebook primarily for use in the audio room!

BTW, Chris, if you see this, I found your YouTube presentation of Roon to be well done and very helpful….Thanks!!

I've been using Roon through a trial after purchasing a DragonFly Red. I've been looking around, but can't find an explanation I can understand. What type of processing does Roon do, in particular on Macs? In comparing my library and Tidal to Audirvana Plus, I find Roon has such an engaging sound I can't stop listening. I'm using an i7 iMac into a Chord Mojo then Focal Elears. I am considering a lifetime subscription to Roon, but am on the fence. If Spotify goes lossless I'll switch over from Tidal as it works better for my musical preferences.

They are not really doing processing as much as just making sure that roon is sending a bit perfect signal to you DAC or player.

Thanks ShawnC. This forum is always such a big help. As a beginner to digital I asked the wrong question.

I am shopping for a digital music systems with the least computer involvement.

So Media Servers. I just bought a Bluesound Vault but have never had a music software system on my iMac or iPad except Tidal. That is all I have besides the Dragonfly Red and a Cobblestone Muzo. The rest is old school.

Before I go for software such as Roon or other, I wonder what gear it is compatible with other than the computer.

I don’t really understand how to use any of these, which of them include NAS and/or DAC which I don’t have.

Would I be using Roon with these:

Bluesound Vault 2 which I already bought.

Other Media Servers I have considered include:

    Sony, e.g. HapZ1ES

Melco N1A High Resolution Digital Music Library

Auralic seems to be a main one for Roon users.

    Naim

    Marantz

    Onkyo

    Cambridge Audio

    Cyrus

    Pioneer

    Aurender N100H

    Oppo

    Portable players:

    Questyle

    Onkyo

    Astell&Kern

    Sony

Seem to me you have enough to have a working system.  The bluestone vaultn2 is an SMB server, aka NAS. The muzo cobblestone is a player and DAC in one box.  You can use the muzo app on your phone or tablet to control playback.

Are you looking for help in making this work? Or are you interested in a higher fidelity platform?

I am interested in another media server to use in a different location than the Vault. I believe Roon will work with the Bluesound Vault 2. Right? It has not arrived yet.  One problem is that there is only one internet modem and I have hifi stereo systems in other areas of the building.

My only trepidation with the Bluesound is that it has to be wire connected to the wif modem so I cannot use it in other places not having the web modem.

I plan to rip 1K or more cds to the Vault. Then learn to download online music.

The Muzo I got to simply play internet music via wifi, including Tidal on a home hifi in a completely different area than the Bluesound will be set up.  I need a wifi streamer for that room. It is OK but not as good sounding as my LM 215 cdp.  I am thinking of getting a 2d media player to use instead of the Muzo. If I go for Roon, I would need a compatible media player.

Yes, well there you go, lots of choices!  Most have been reviewed somewhere in CA.

And yes, your bluesound vault should play with these streamers.

If your looking to use Roon specifically, you'll need some sort of computer/NAS to run Roon on, they call it the Core. So an Intel Nuc, an old computer can work (that meets Roon's specs.), or your iMac would work.  If you already have your music on it then your set.  I'm not sure if this will work, you can search Roon's site, you could run Roon on your Mac and use your Bluesound vault as the NAS that Roon is looking at, for it's music content.  It's nice to have Ethernet wired everywhere so you can just add Sonore's microRendu's in every room you want music in and a DAC and your done.  The microRendu acts as zone in Roon, just and an ethernet to one end and a DAC to the other. Easier said then done. Microrendu's aren't cheap either.  So many options.

I know your looking for the least computer involvement but if you want Roon you'll need some sort of computer. Almost all other media servers have there own software that wouldn't run with Roon.

Thanks for that info Shawn. The Bluesound just arrived and I am unpacking it.

I hope to use the iPad Pro as a control/remote for Roon. I got the max memory available. I don't know if the iPad limits the sound quality from the web to the BlueVault2. The Vault is hard wired to the wifi modem and the iPad of course is wifi.

I did keep my older Mac and had planned to use it as a music device but it constantly asks for, and requires software updates. It is maxed at around Mac OS 7.8 or so and won't accept newer programs so I quit using it.

I will look into the microRendu option too.

It would be a pain to run ethernet in this old house, possible but I would rather not go to the work as I will be moving to a tiny house in a couple years.

With the new update and peq addition is it possible to load convolution  filters from other software like acourate, red, Dirac etc.

    Thank you

Yes, there's a very good post on how to use REW on the Room website.

I guess HQP integration is not affected. I am not sure if this means that when you engage the upsampling and DSP engines  integration is turned off, I doubt it. If you're  enough to upsample in Roon HQ ,I suppose you can check yourself again.
