Roon 1.3 Major Update Coming Today

This just in. Much more to come.

"We're very excited to announce that Roon 1.3 is going live today! This is our most ambitious release ever – in the works for nearly nine months – but we think it's been worth the wait. With new streaming hardware support, audio processing, DSP, file handling, metadata management, and social sharing, there are new features and improvements in almost every area of the product.

We've incorporated hundreds of suggestions from you, and thrown in a few of our own:

"With the 1.3 update, Roon now streams to Sonos devices! This means all the users in a home – with one app and one music collection – can play music to Sonos, Airplay, Squeezebox, Sooloos, and any of over 50 Roon Ready devices available today.

We've added a whole family of audio and DSP features with a 64-bit audio pipeline, including dynamic range analysis, EQ, upsampling, crossfeed for headphones, and adjustments for headroom as well as corrections for speaker phase and delay.

Roon learns about you as you use it. You create playlists, tags, and groom your collection to be presented just the way you want. Now all of that can be automatically backed up, both locally and to Dropbox. Backups are incremental and configurable, so you can save as much history as you like. Roon users have been talking about their favorite music on our community site, on social networks, and even by texting screenshots from their phones. With 1.3, you can create shareable images about artists, albums, and songs, including all of Roon's metadata and your own comments. Images can be posted directly to Facebook, Twitter, and Imgur, or saved to your device. Starting with a new lightning-fast search, we've improved performance across the board. Audio and database operations are faster, and communication between Core and Remotes is more responsive."

Unfortunately It had to re-scan my music folder and every album is now tagged as New. The problem with this is, I was only adding MQA stuff so I new what albums were MQA vs. everything else I've had in Roon. That was going to be an easy way for me to find MQA albums. I was just using Tidal through Jriver at the time but I was waiting for today's update to test it all out.

Early results without testing or changing anything yet, my Bel Canto 3.7 DAC (non-MQA DAC) shows input as 48, so it is getting Tidal's MQA version, BTW it's Iron Maiden Killer's, first album I could find that I knew was MQA encoded.

I was hoping they would do it. Not a hard fix, I'll just use the Tidal account to find them and tag them like you did.

Agreed. Roon can identify MQA downloads but not in tidal yet.

Can you group play all of the different endpoints? Sonos, Blusesound, Apple TV etc?

Update to build 193. There is a bug in 192 that crashes Roon when device setup is selected. Fixed in 193.

This is amazing! There has never been so much under one roof. The EQ works very well and I have only scratched the surface.

A great new feature when looking under album and then tracks, is that shows how many versions you have in your library of that song and what's available on Tidal. Before it seemed to only work occasionally. I suck at showing screen shots, maybe someone can chime in.

Well, you can group Sonos, but you can't group Sonos with Roon endpoints. the issue is that Sonos is a closed system. https://kb.roonlabs.com/Sonos

    No software decoding yet.

That's disappointing, but thanks for the response and updates Chris (invaluable service to the community, as always). For the moment, I shall remain on the fence....

Yes - that lack of MQA decoding for me was a real bummer - wanted it badly.

Ahhh - well - maybe next release. Did a post on their forum that they had should make it a LOT clearer when that is coming with a sticky on their support forums.

    Still a nice release anyway.

    Thanks

    Bill

Where is this EQ in Roon 1.3? I've looked everywhere but nothing...

Under Settings, Audio, if it's your DAC (what ever your output is) choose the gear wheel symbol. That'll take you to further settings, like DSP engine.
