Roon 1.3 Major Update Coming Today

This just in. Much more to come.

"We're very excited to announce that Roon 1.3 is going live today! This is our most ambitious release ever – in the works for nearly nine months – but we think it's been worth the wait. With new streaming hardware support, audio processing, DSP, file handling, metadata management, and social sharing, there are new features and improvements in almost every area of the product.

We've incorporated hundreds of suggestions from you, and thrown in a few of our own:

"With the 1.3 update, Roon now streams to Sonos devices! This means all the users in a home – with one app and one music collection – can play music to Sonos, Airplay, Squeezebox, Sooloos, and any of over 50 Roon Ready devices available today.

We've added a whole family of audio and DSP features with a 64-bit audio pipeline, including dynamic range analysis, EQ, upsampling, crossfeed for headphones, and adjustments for headroom as well as corrections for speaker phase and delay.

Roon learns about you as you use it. You create playlists, tags, and groom your collection to be presented just the way you want. Now all of that can be automatically backed up, both locally and to Dropbox. Backups are incremental and configurable, so you can save as much history as you like. Roon users have been talking about their favorite music on our community site, on social networks, and even by texting screenshots from their phones. With 1.3, you can create shareable images about artists, albums, and songs, including all of Roon's metadata and your own comments. Images can be posted directly to Facebook, Twitter, and Imgur, or saved to your device. Starting with a new lightning-fast search, we've improved performance across the board. Audio and database operations are faster, and communication between Core and Remotes is more responsive."

    Feature additions are fecking amazing.

    Agree.

I also can't wait for the Roon Optimized Core Kit (ROCK) that runs a custom version of Linux and can take advantage of many cool new features.

I am sorry miguelito but I am not sure how many years I still have... so, a more reasonably price would be more than welcome :-)

How about a discount equal to your age? Only problem is that Roon would get sued for age discrimination. ;-))

More seriously, any thoughts yet on how 1.3 may affect the interaction with HQPlayer?

Possibly a small discount will push all the NUTCASES here over the edge and number will compensate for lower price...

My understanding is HQP integration is NOT affected. I don't know (yet) if this means that when you engage the upsampling and DSP engines the HQP integration is turned off but I really doubt it. If you're crazy enough to upsample in Roon and then reupsample in HQP, then I suppose you can knock yourself out... :)

Also keep in mind that HQP acts after the endpoint as opposed to upsampling/DSP which happens in the core prior to routing to the endpoint over RAAT. So I am fairly certain you can use both - will try.

... so, does v1.3 allow Tidal content to be software unfolded (at least to 24/96, like Tidal's own desktop application)? No mention of, what is to many, and important issue has me a little concerned, though that doesn't mean it's not baked in. As a JRMC user who's been on the fence with Roon for a while due to its high (I'm not necessarily saying unjustified, just high) price, this feature could be just the thing to get me to finally pull the trigger (esp. given my non-MQA-enabled DAC).

Interestingly, I would expect that those using NUC/NAS-based cores will find that they cannot upsample to DSD256 in Roon (not enough compute power) and would have to fall back to upsampling in HQP at the endpoint.

Not sure why those using HQP would even think of using any DSP/upsampling in Roon. Otherwise, why use HQP? If the idea is to compare, then ok, but not both. If Roon wins out, drop HQP (unlikely but the logical end to this argument)

    No software decoding yet.

My major holdup for getting Roon and MicroRendu was always that I'd also need to get HQPlayer to do some simple parametric EQ for room correction in my main stereo. That's why I kept using my CAPSv3 Carbon. Roon 1.3 might finally change that. Will have to see. Lots to think about.

Just find it annoying they make the announcement before the software is online for download. Why not wait till we can actually download/update?

I hear ya. I've been clicking About Roon way too many times today, looking for the update.
