At the Munich High End show in 2022, Managing Director Manuel de la Fuente told me about a program the team was working on and the larger picture for Audirvana. I was very enthusiastic then, and I'm happy to see it come to fruition. Today the company announced its new program called "Plāys with Audirvāna." This is a win-win situation, especially for fans of Audirvana's software.
The bottom line is this, Audirvana now has a program to certify that specific hardware works with its applicaion and is identified corectly within the app. According to the company, "'Plāys with Audirvāna' is not another proprietary protocol and does not add any unnecessary extra costs for the customers or the manufacturers. It is a certification based on a simple and comprehensive test protocol checking all aspects of the interoperability between the equipment and Audirvāna for the concerned connection mode: UPnP, USB and or Chromecast."
Even though Audirvana supports open standards such as UPnP and USB audio, that alone doesn't ensure smooth operation between software and hardware. I always consider UPnP the most nonstandard standard. Its implementation is all over the board, with some manufacturers cutting corners or making adjustments that aren't published anywhere. The same can be said for USB. I've experienced USB playback through certain products that couldn't handle audio information unless there was a half second of silence at the start of the track. A program such as "Plāys with Audirvāna" will either resolve the issue via software, durring testing, or encourage manufacturers to resove the issue another way, else risk being left out of the program which leaves uncertanty for consumers.
I really love this move by Audirvana for so many reasons, chief among them is it removes ambiguity and frustration for consumers. I look forward to seeing the list of partners in the program continue to grow. As of today, the following brands are in the program. They will soon be followed by CH PRECISION, LYNGDORF, METRONOME, SOULUTION, VERMEER AUDIO and many more to come. "We are already working with 20 other manufacturers, and we will meet with new ones during the coming Munich High End show", according to Manuel de la Fuente.
