JPLAY for iOS Is Now Available

Just a quick update: we're working on improving the search for UPnP devices mechanism. If anyone with Lumin who has connectivity issues would like to test our internal builds, please send me a PM.

I'd been using the Linn apps (Kazoo, then Linn) to talk to my exaSound S88 local drive (share local drive) and they worked just fine.  When I started the Jplay app (iPhone) it saw all the correct devices and I pointed it to the S88.  It doesn't connect to it.  It's been several days now, trying refresh every so often.  Not sure what is wrong. 

Out of curiosity I decided to try JPlay for iOS. Unfortunately it doesn't see my UPnP/DLNA/OpenHome server.  Is JPlay for iOS compatible with OpenHome?

I have both BubbleUPnPServer and MinimServer running, with upmpdcli as the renderer.  (This is on ArcoLinux, an Arch-based distro.  I have the same setup on Xubuntu, but haven't tried that.)  Linn Kazoo, mConnect, Lumin, and Audirvana can always see my local music files with this setup; Kazoo, mConnect and Audirvana can always play Qobuz, while Lumin sometimes will and sometimes won't. When I have tried HQPlayer-embedded I recall it at least plays local files; I don't remember if it can play music from Qobuz.  But JPlay for iOS won't do either. It doesn't see the computer running UPnP as a device, only my phone.  (The computer is connected to my network via optical Ethernet.  My phone of course is using Wi-Fi, with a very strong signal and good speed (over 320 Mbps when I tested just now)).

Any suggestions, or is my setup just one that JPlay for iOS has some hiccups with at this stage?

Heh, oldest remedy in the book, restarted the phone and this time JPlay picked up both local files and Qobuz.

Is there a merged view of both local and Qobuz music by an artist?  I see separate views.

If you find an artist on Qobuz and at the same time have them somewhere in your own database, scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is a link to your database. Otherwise, in the "my Music" folder you have a mix of your own database of artists and favorites from Qobuz.

If you think Lumin app for some reason is degrading sound quality, you can power off the iOS / Android device.  Lumin hardware will continue to play its playlist (from Qobuz / Tidal / local files).  If powering off the iOS / Android device does not make a SQ difference, you'd need to look into the other hardware components for internet streaming vs local network streaming as I suggested in another post.  If powering off the iOS /Android device does make a SQ difference, then you'd need to try a different WiFi band, by using two different SSID (name) for your WiFi in the router.  Although rarely reported, I know an audiophile (not using Lumin but European brands of streamer, DAC and amp) reported his setup is affected differently by 2.4GHz vs 5GHz WiFi, probably due to RFI.

I agree that the album view(s) for an artist could benefit from some improvements.

I believe it all starts with the fact that for Qobuz only Favorized Artists are shown.  Being a Roon user, i never favorized Artists in Qobuz (with 3 exceptions), so in JPlay on the Home screen I see 3 Atists in the heading

When I perform a search for e.g. The Doobie Brothers, I get all their (and related) albums, found at Qobuz & locally

Unfortunately, you cannot see if you have them locally, Qobuz favorized or not in your Library.  That is definitely missing.

Clicking an album that I know is in my Library (local for this example) 

Only when I scroll down, i then see what versions I have in my library

If I start looking for The Doobie Brothers in My Local Network, where I have a populated Artist list, I then get my local albums only.

So I agree it need some rework.

(it could maybe work if Qobuz would automatically favorize the corresponding  artist when you favorize an album, but it is safe toassume that will never happen)

Concerning the artists number this is a remark I’ve done to Marcin during my beta test period. For my part I find more logic to display the total number of artists.

I have now gpaless playback with some boundaries, as explained by Stephano:

Be aware that gapless works for upsampling pcm files (flac ….) and playing native DSD without upsampling them (Direct SDM checked)

P.S. What I personally do not understand why DSD gapless playback is working perfectly in Roon, as the communication between Roon and HQPlayer is not UPNP but it is not RAAT either.  
 

I am trialing jplay for IOS and none of my lumin streamers are seen by Jplay.  The only thing seen are my ipads and ZenStream.

Moving around in the various apps I've got for playing local and streaming music, I have to say JPlay for iOS at this point is only rivaled by the Audirvana remote, and of course one needs Audirvana Origin or Audirvana Studio to use the latter.  In particular, ease of searching in Qobuz is already better than Linn Kazoo and mConnect, and for whatever reason the Lumin app, while lovely, just doesn't pick up on my ability to play from Qobuz reliably. (It's quite happy with my local files.)

Audirvana remote, like Roon Remote, is a remote command that mirrors on your mobile device the functionality of the respective server, it seems to me compare apples and oranges. Audirvana remote is not a UPNP app, it is a completely different thing (like Roon remote as well).

I’ve been using Qobuz on Lumïn app for some months (thanks to various trial periods) and never had any trouble to play from it, if Bubbleupnpserver was running and rightly configured. I couldn’t find any difference between Qobuz and local library. Could you please elaborate ?

On the Log screen, I can check the Log box, but I cannot press anything else, not clickable.

The ultimate result is similar: You play music by using a phone app to work with software (a player application or server) running on a computer.

For me, since I prefer upsampling in software, one nice thing is that the Audirvana remote or JPlay controlling HQP-embedded will allow you to do that from your phone.

I run both bubbleupnpserver and minimserver on my two Linux distros. MConnect and Linn Kazoo, and now JPlay, see both of these reliably. For some reason Lumin always detects the local files through minimserver, but only sometimes sees the Qobuz capability of bubbleupnpserver.

Correct. I don’t wish that specific one on anyone :~)

I very much like many users already would very much love/need to use a convolution filter too. But that could go via Roon already if I am right?

@Marcin_gpsIs it possible that i join the trial of JPlay - using a LUMIN U2 Mini with ROON currently, but very much would love to try out various options.

I am willing to bet that is impossible to do via Roon, but super simple with HQPlayer.

As with HQP-embedded and Audirvana, development along these lines seems most likely to come from player software developers.
