How To CA: Custom Activity Streams, Bookmarks and More

Hey Guys - It's a strange week here in the US with our Independence Day holiday smack in the middle of the week. I tried to take some time off but got caught up in a few forum topics in which I couldn't stop watching and participating.

We recently created a new forum on the site called Around the Industry. This area automatically pulls in articles from other publications, given these publications enable the feature. Sometimes we are able to pull in an image and the first paragraph while other times we can only pull in the title and link. I really like this new area because it enables people to comment on other articles free from heavy moderation and it enables people to comment on articles published on site's that don't even allow comments.

That said, some people don't like the new forum area and don't want to see posts from this area in their activity streams / unread content. No worries, I completely understand. I created a custom activity stream for just this reason, it's called Unread Content No RSS Feeds.

To help people better use CA, I created a few videos showing how to create one's own custom activity stream, how to use the bookmarks feature, and how to ignore specific users.

Let me know if you have questions or what any other videos in the future.

Not a full solution, but if you go into the first page of the category you can "mark forum as read"; then if your display is for "unread" content it won't appear.

Thank you. This is what I am doing, but, everytime I open forum I see my carefully selected topics to check flooded with industry news again. I tried to ignore the poster account, but it comes anyway, only headlines without content. I understand many people just love these news, however I would appreciate the opportunity to customize the bookmarked tab content. I am trying to create custom stream now, let's see how it works.

You can also click the name of your feed on the home page (mine is "new content unread", see below) and edit what it displays. Just don't include the Industry news and it won't appear .

I created "My stream" slightly edited, will compare it with default unread stream to be sure nothing from what I want to keep was missed. Thank you.

Thanks Chris! Instruction videos were very helpful and Around the Industry forum is an excellent idea.

With Chris's help I found a super convenient way to keep track of all my subscribed topics. Creating custom stream made it convenient. I found four settings particularly helpful, and here is a picture of those setting. I encourage everyone who uses the subscribe function to make their own custom stream and try these settings.

In the instruction video Chris says that choosing your custom stream as default makes "a shortcut" under Activity-tab. Well, it didn't really work that way. Choosing default actually does make a shortcut, but to different location. I'll put a picture here that shows the location.

I am very happy about this shortcut feature. It makes entering custom stream and following subscribed topics so convenient.

Thanks for all the help Chris. I would not have got the settings right without your help.

One more thing about the shortcut. If you use tablet or phone the shortcut comes to the very top of the page. Super convenient!

Not directly related, but... is there any practical difference between "like" and "upvote" for a post?
